Send wireless internet only
I have just added a wireless router to my soho network. It is my intention to share my broadband connection with my neighbour. Can I transmit only the internet connection without sharing my files and printers also?
Thanks. |

Yes and no........he will see your workgroup, but if you set up adequate user-based security he won't be able to log into it. There is going to have to be some degree of trust here.

Thanks GLC, understood. Is there some way of sending the wireless signal before it connects to my network, i.e., can I put a wireless router(set to non-dhcp) after the sat/modem and before my network router/switch?

yes you can do it that way or another option is look at a higher end access point that can disable computers from browsing the network with something called:
Wireless Client Security Separation If enabled, the associated wireless clients will not be able to communicate with each other. This feature is intended for hotspots and other public access situations. this is from my netgear WAG302 access point, i can setup multple wireless networks off of this oneaccess point, so if i wanted to share out my wireless connection to my neighbors i could setup a wireless network for them and then enable wireless client security seperation, and then have another wireless network for me. the wag302 is more of a business type access point, but i had so many issues with linksys wap54g access points and tried so many different ones bc i kept dropping my signal all the time (it affected all my pcs all at the same time so i know it wasnt pc related), that i paid a little extra (ok, a lot more then i wanted to, but the one i wanted wag102 was sold out everywhere and this was the only one availabe) and this one has worked flawlessly every since i put it in. just thought i would throw it out there for ya. here are some images to show you what im talking about. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a21...agProfile1.jpg http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a21...WProfiles1.jpg

wag302
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833122088 wag102 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833122090 i dont know if newegg ships to aussie land nor how much it would cost, but if so, and it doesnt cost to much these are the two i would look at. i would contact netgear to specifically ask them if the wag102 has the multiple wireless network profiles feature as well as the wireless client security seperation. |
