ISP gateway disabled but can get IPs
Guys
I finished installing a fast Internet connection for a Small Network. The have a Dlink 704 router which has one port connected to a Switch and used to connect bout five PC's. The problem is that 1 PC ( XP2 ) cant browse using domain names but can do so using IP's, when I check their Network connections the ISP icon says diabled if I try to enable it just cant. I hv scanned using McAffee but to no avail. I suspect that its a virus of some sort.

you have a dns problem on that machine
go to the local area connection tcp/ip settings and double check your dns settings, if yoiur behind the router, just put the routers ip address in for the dns as primary and put one of the isp dns entry's in as secondary. are there any domain controllers on this network? when u say u cant browse using domain names are you meaning u cant browse domain name internally or are you meaning you cant browse the internet with domain names? try this as well start>run>cmd>type ipconfig /flushdns

I have tried the two main things you suggestd:
1- Prefered DNS change to router IP 2- Flushd the DNS Result = Not successful On doamin I meant that if I wantd to browse PC mech then I gotta get the IP if not the page cannot be displayed. I checked my nameserver which is running on FC4 as a caching one and its all good |

If you are using a router, there should not be an ISP icon in network connections - just a local area connection - delete it. You may need to run the networking wizard again, this time choose the computer connects to the Internet through a residential gateway.

The ISP icon cannot be deleted. It doesnt have that as an option.
Maybe I might have mislead you I meant Internet gateway icon which shows in XP. On one new machine which had the same problem has just startd workin automatically. And the icon has disappeared and I can still get the internet. hmmmm strange. The original PC's owner didnt come to work so I guess I will answer more later |
