Wireless Woes
I am in the market for a new wireless router to interact with my multiple desktops, laptops and 2 XBOXES's, it seems my D-524 has a very weak signal strength and I am looking for something powerful and robust enough to handle my constant online and XBOX Live gaming, not sure what my budget is yet but would like some suggestions on some good equipment. What about the new "n" technology? Or should I stick with "g"?
I have a small house and lots of walls, I am assuming that is causing my weak signal, perhaps I could just purchase a new router and set one up as an access point? I hope you all can help with my wireless woes. Thanks |

are both of your xbox's setup for wireless? Preferred method when gaming is using a wired connection first, and resorting to wireless only if you cant get a network cable to the console.
from my understanding the new N technology is not set in stone yet by the IEEE, and they are still working out some of the kinks and quirks with the technology. I believe that the N will provide faster speeds as long as all wireless adapters are 802.11n compliant and provide a longer range. you can definitely try these out, i think most people have been going for the belkin or Linksys SRX N wireless routers, or another option would be to setup a Linksys wireless router and then get a linksys access point and set it up as a repeater to help extend your wireless signal throughout the house. i have set this up before and it worked great, but remember that your effective throughput is cut everytime you repeat the signal. so if you setup one repeater and you are using the 802.11g with 54Mbps then it will now be cut down to 27Mbps, if you had another repeater it will be cut down to 13.5, and so on.

I try to remain in contact with the new 802.1 n standards, which have been in a state of limbo for over a year and a half. The best thing you could do, in my opinion, is pick one manufacturer who is selling their version of the MIMO/802.1n product, not yet finalized between wireless manufacturers, and purchase everything from that same manufacturer. I like Belkin, but there are many other choices for n, pre n, and MIMO products which are built to mimimize the problems you are having.
I beleive the 802.1n standard will be here relatively soon, and most of those manufacturers will adjust their firmware via updates once the standard is finally nailed down. Until then you can use the same manufacturers products and protocols to solve your short term problem. This is what I would do, at least. Take it for what its worth. |
