What type of Router do you use?

This is my first attempt at a poll here...so here goes nothing...I recently switched to Linksys from SMC and am very satisified. I'm curious what everyone else uses. If you care to add your comments too that would be nice. Perhaps you've had good results with a famous/not so famous brand or maybe you have had one that would serve better as a paperweight...all thoughts welcome and encouraged!

For the record I now use a Linksys (WRT54GL).

Thanks in advance.

I used to use a Linksys until it got hit by lightning. Funny thing is that the thing will power up just fine except the WAN is always lit. The Switch part works just fine. (Remember, even with Surge protection, you're still vulnerable from the cable line) The reason I believe that the cable line was hit is because it fried the cable modem as well.

Cool little IP tracker thingy in your signature block...

I think there are surge protectors out there for cable also...there must be...somewhere.

There are
Some UPS' have cable jacks for you to route your cable through.

I use a DLink, and it works great. Parents have a Linksys router (WRT54G) that's been giving me a little bit of trouble. Also got a linksys switch that works great.

Linksys WRT54GL now. Used to have a Netgear wired router but I was constantly having to reset it. This Linksys is my preferred unit now for all customer installs. Previously I had used D-Link and Belkin units as well as Netgear. I won't use Netgear any more and the DLink DI-524 has had a higher than normal failure rate too.

Linksys WRT54G for me. i was using a smoothwall on an old dell xps 300, but just felt like changing it up especially after i couldnt get my vpn to work with the smoothwall even after opening up all the correct ports, plus it always told me i needed to download and install updates, but there was never any updates to install.

I made my own router out of a computer I bought from the school auction for $5 and the free IPCop software. I has a pII 350 and 224 MB of memory, and 2 3com 3c905b NICs. It runs better than any off the shelf router I've ever tried, and handled the 50 gamer LAN parties I hosted at school like a champ. The uplink in that case was the school's 100 megabit network. With the party going at full tilt, I was still able to transfer files across the router at 10 MB/s, which is pretty darn close the theoretical 12.5 MB/s maximum of a 100 megabit network. Sometimes I download 50 torrents at the same time, and never notice any hit to my internet speed or network performance, and I never, ever have to power-cycle/reboot the thing.

I use the Linksys that glc recommended years ago; it's still running strong and has a good firewall. (Thanks again, BTW )

I have a Linksys Wireless-B router which has a whole burnt in the bottom of it due to me putting it on top of a lamp. Plastic does melt, duh!

I am currently useing the Linksys Router BEFSR81 and before that I used a Linksys BEFSR41, but lightning did a trick on it and it couldn't be used anymore. The folks at Linksys are really helpful, but a little hard for me to understand because their English is with an accent. After talking with the people there, I have been useing their routers for a few years. I wouldn't use any other brand. They do the job well.

I use a Netgear DG834G - which may or may not be available in the USA. It's an ADSL Modem / Wireless router combo and works very well. It has been my preferred unit for customer installs for the past year or so.

My first router was actually a similar Linksys model, that didn't work very well at all (WAG54G). More of a duff model than a slur on Linksys, but I've had no problems with Netgear equipment since I made the switch, so I'm sticking with them.

Was happy with Linksys

I was using Linksys for last 4 years but now have to switch to Netgear which my new ISP has provided and i can't use any other router with their service (strange). Not happy with netgear. Linksys was trouble free.

Who's the ISP? You should be able to use whatever router you want. You may not be officially supported under there policy if you use your own, but as far as I know the MAC address, which can be spoofed, is the only way they can tell what router you're using.

Netgear WGR614v6
Not real happy wiith it.
It drops the connection pretty often and the consensus on the Netgear forum is that it has overheating issues that cause that.
Replacement will be Linksys, likely not wireless.

I use a Hawking HWR54G. I think it was $25...

I don't don't know how it stacks up to other routers because it is the first one I've used. My signal strength is always excellent to my wireless adapter upstairs. No disconnects yet since I installed them (the router and the card) four days ago.

Sounds a lot like me. Linksys WRT54GL here - great stable router. I used to have a Netgear Wireless 802.11b spec router - the wireless part crapped out after three years of usage.
