Netgear AP & Linksys adapter

Hi,

I have two different questions:

Recently I switched from BT Broadband to SKY Broadband. SKY sent me wireless modem/router of Netgear. That is wired connected with my desktop and internet is running fine. Another desktop is accessing AP through netgear wireless USB adapter and internet runs OK.

Fisrt question:

I have to reset AP very frequently (2-3 times daily) to keep the service running. A gap of 60-90 mins between browsing causes this problem. Continuous browsing of 2-3 hours, no issue.

Second question:

I am using Linksys wireless adapter in my laptop but that is unable to go through internet. Both AP & adapter are 802.11g compatible. I have tried all option i.e. without encryption and with WEP & WPA but no success. Laptop does get through to AP but not further.

Same adapter works fine on Linksys AP with all type of encryptions.

Any cluse on these issues please?

Thanks
NMS

Make sure the router has sufficient IP addresses in the DHCP pool to allow enough computers to connect. Make sure there's no timeout settings enabled in the router.

Thanks glc,

I have check both the things.

DHCP starting address is 192.168.0.1 & ending is 192.168.0.254, so sufficient IP addresses.

Time out was set to 1440 minutes i.e. 24 hrs, so should not be a problem in 2-3 hours. But I have disabled that, problem stil there.

Lost again.

do you have a static ip address on the wireless pc? if so make sure the default gateway is set to the ip address of the router and not the access point.

Thanks Ob1,

Wireless PC is configured as "Obtain an IP address automatically (DHCP)" and DHCP is "on" in my router and have full range of IP addresses available.

It also offers the option of "Specify IP address" and takes following inputs:
IP address
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway
DNS1
DNS2

Now when I see the settings of my netgear moder/router I see following:

For ADSL Port:
IP address (this changes every time when I re-connect with my ISP)
IP subnet mask 255.255.255.255 (remain same always)
Gateway IP adress:195.xxx.xxx.xxx (remains same always)
DNS: 87.86.xx.xx (remains same always)

For LAN Port:
IP address: 192.168.0.1 (address of my router, always remain same)
DHCP: on
IP Subnetmask:255.255.255.0 (always remain same)

Now please guide me that for my wireless PC, if I go for "specify IP address" option then what I give to settings:
IP address (will it be of router, which is 192.168.0.1)?
Subnet Mask (will it be 255.255.255.0)?
Default Gateway (will it be again 192.168.0.1)?
DNS1 (no idea, will it be DNS of the ADSL port?
DNS2 (no idea)?

Also Ob1, when you say that "ip address of the router and not the access point", then by access point do you mean IP address of ADSL port? which is dynamic.

Thanks
Nasir

if you run the ipconfig /all command what is your Ip information showing for your wireless card?

setup your wireless card with this info:

ip address: 192.168.0.x (you cant use your router ip address for your wireless pc, it will cause and ip conflict on your network)
x is where you enter a unique number that is not being used by any other device on your LAN.
subnet. 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.0.1
DNS1 192.168.0.1
DNS2 use the first DNS ip address you have on your adsl ISP provider or just leave it blank.

Thanks Ob1

In the mean time I tried almost similar thing:

ip address: 192.168.0.4 (as router is .1, two desktops are .2 & .3 so my laptop would be .4
subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS1: Same as that of my ADSL port
DNS2: left blanks

And it finally worked with manual configuration

Still not sure that why obtain IP address automatically thru DHCP is not working, whereas one of wireless desktop is riunning that way but that desktop has wireless adapter of netgear (and router is also netgear) but laptop has wireless adapter of Linksys. May be some interworking issue between Linksys & Netgear for DHCP. Both marry up happily (I hope) with manual configuration.

Thanks again

Very often, the DHCP process will time out before the wireless adapter is associated with the router. This is always the case with Win98 and frequently happens with Win2000. XP should begin a DHCP search upon association, but it's not always reliable. Make sure if you have XP SP2 you are using the Windows zero configuration utility to configure the card, not the cardmaker's utility.
