Friend's Computer Problems...

He thinks he got a virus from something he downloaded online.

Symptoms - computer runs extremely slow, tons of crashing, and I believe whatever he got puts out fake pop-ups wanting him to download more stuff.

We've run Norton, SpyBot, and then Pandawhatever...when we came back, the Panda scan thing had disappeared.

get rid of norton antivirus & NIS 06 and use AVG. Norton is a big resource hog. if your behind a hardware router/firewall and you have xp just use the xp firewall.

remove all the crap you have running in the background or starting at bootup. start>run>msconfig>startup tab

what are your system specs?

run adaware, spybot and possibly ewido or A-square to scan for more spyware.

run crap cleaner as well.

check for rootkits using these tools:

You have both McAfee and Norton installed and running. This is a big no-no. Uninstall them BOTH, enable the Windows XP firewall, install AVG Free, and do a full system scan and fix anything it finds. Install and run antispyware applications as indicated in the sticky thread. Then post a new log in normal mode, exactly as directed in the sticky thread, BEFORE opening ANY programs.
