Trouble with WRT54G wireless router

Hello everyone,

I'm having trouble with my Linksys WRT54G wireless router. Yesterday my wife mentioned that she couldn't access the internet on her laptop. I found the red DIAG light on (solid) on the router. I contacted the Linksys support site through email but their suggestions aren't helping.

Here's a copy of the instructions they gave me:

This is caused by the firmware not loading correctly. You may try the following steps below to fix this.

1. Hard reset the router. Hold the reset button for 30 seconds, unplug the power cable from the back while still holding the reset button, wait for another 10 seconds, plug it back in, then release the button.
2. If you still have the Red Diag Light, download the latest release firmware for your router from http://www.linksys.com/download. Be sure to select the Router's CORRECT model number. Look underneath the router and check the model number. Version number is written right next to the model number. If it does not say any version, it is version 1.
3. Follow the instructions that came with the firmware upgrade.

If firmware upgrade failed, try the following steps:

1. Hard reset the router again.
2. Assign your computer a static IP address.
3. If using a 10/100 network adapter, change its speed to 10Mb, half duplex.
4. Run firmware upgrade. Please read the attached instruction that came with the firmware upgrade file before you do the upgrade.

Assigning Static IP

For Win9x/ME

1. Right click on Network Neighborhood > Properties
2. Select TCP/IP bound to Linksys wireless network card > Properties.
3. Go to IP address tab > set to specify an IP Address and enter the following values:

Static IP: 192.168.1.8
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

4. Click OK on all open windows. If it asks you to restart, hit YES.

For XP/2000

1. Go to Control Panel > Network Connections > Right click on Local Area Connections > Properties
2. Select Internet Protocol TCP/IP > Properties.
3. Select Use the following IP Address

Static IP: 192.168.1.8
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

4. Click OK on all open windows.
I have tried the reset technique twice with no effect. I successfully set the static IP but it didn't help. The only thing I couldn't figure out how to do was set the network adapter to 10Mb, half duplex. I'm using an onboard adapter.

Here's all the information I can think of:
  • Internet connection still working when desktop machine plugs directly into the modem.
  • Have had this network configuration for over 3 years without trouble.
  • Cannot access web based configuration window for router (192.168.1.1)
  • Can't remember ever upgrading the firmware
  • Both the desktop and laptop are running XP (Pro and Home respectively)
  • Using a Linksys BEFCMU10 cable modem

Is it possible that my router has just developed a "lemon" status? Is there a way to upgrade the firmware without accessing the web based admin page?

Please help

If you cannot access 192.168.1.1 - then your router has probably become defective somehow. Maybe it got fried by a power surge? If pressing the reset button on the router doesn't help, I have no clue what is going on. You can try to insert the installation CD that came with the router again. My aunt has a WRT54GS and has a lot of problems, too.

go to device manager, then the properties for that NIC, click the advanced tab and find the speed selection and choose 10/half duplex, just remember to switch it back when done troubleshooting.

first reset the router one more time, then connect one pc directly to the switch portion of the router, set a static ip address and subnet mask (192.168.1.100 subnet 255.255.255.0) then open your web browser and enter 192.168.1.1 default password is admin, then go to the administration tab, then upgrade firmware, browse to where you downloaded and extracted the .bin file with the firmware upgrade. after upgrading, log back in to make sure it still works, also check to see if the diag LED is still illuminated, if so, chances are its fried. if not, then go back to your pc and set it to automatically obtain an IP address, and see if both pcs can get on the internet.

Thanks everyone for your help and input.

I tried going through the process again and had no success. After reading posts here and other researched sites, I'm getting the impression that my router has achieved failure status. It doesn't appear to be as uncommon as I expected.

Best Buy has this same model on sale right now so I'll just run down and pick up another. Considering I've had this piece for over 3 years and it's been running every day since, I can justify the cost.

Thanks again for your quick responses

Careful, the WRT54G you have is not the same that Best Buy is selling now. The newer versions of the WRT54G are known to be problematic. Try to pick up a WRT54GL instead if possible.

I have had this Wireless B router for what seems like forever, probably 3 years, and it has had a hold burnt in the bottom of it. They seem to be quality units, it's a shame yours went bad.
