NAS bringing my wireless to a crawl?

I just hooked up a Simpletech NAS to my home network ( 2 wired and 1 wireless, basic D-Link wireless G router) and now my wireless connection speed is constantly low or none This is even with the NAS in spindown mode. Also, I've had to do a connection repair twice on my laptop since setting up the NAS. Is there anything I can do to get my speed back to normal?

How is the NAS connected to the network, wired directly into the router? If so, that shouldn't affect your wireless speed, but it may be clogging your entire network with weird traffic for some reason. Do your wired computers seem affected at all? If the NAS is wired, and the only affected computer is the wireless one, either the NAS is somehow interferring with the wireless radio signals, or the addition of the NAS and the poor wireless is a complete coincidence.

The NAS is wired to the router. The wired machines are not effected at all, and the NAS is about 12' away from the router in a different room. Do you think a reboot of the router would help?

a few questions:

when your wireless goes in the tank, are you simultaneously accessing the NAS and another resource via the wireless client?

are you seeing a drop in signal strength or just a drop in bandwidth?

are your drivers and router firmware up to date?

A reboot may help, yes. Does the probem go away instantly when you disconnect the NAS? HTH

my gut says that the NAS is pumping a ton of packets out on to the wireless link clogging it up (wireless is like a hub, only 1 device can send at a time)

Well I'm assuming that while I'm using the lappy just browsing the internet that it is not talking to the NAS? If that is true, then no simultaneous accessing going on during slow down.

Drop in signal, sometimes it's saying "no signal" but I'm still able to browse?

I'm at work now but I know I've upped the router firmware pretty recently (within 3-6 months)

I'll check that and update if needed, then reboot the router see how it goes.

One question..... I have MAC filtering enabled, encrypted wireless, and set me router not to send a beacon signal. Can any of those things be the problem?

Thanks for the help

filtering and encryption can have some effect but not enough to bring everything to a screeching halt.

like floppy suggested, disconnect the NAS and see if that solves your problem.
