Limited or no connectivity

A friend of mine brought her computer to me because the cable company told her that her NIC was bad. She has a Dell Dimension 3000 (suprise, suprise) and it is integrated NIC. I have tried disabling it and repairing it but it always says "could not renew Ip", any other time it says "Limited or no connectivity" in the sytem tray.

I have tried about 5 other spare NICs that I have and have installed the drivers for each, but I get the same message in the system tray. This pc was working one minute, she said it got a message saying that the connection was lost and then it didnt work any more.

Her pc was pretty much trashed anyways and they wanted me to reinstall everything. I reinstalled windows and still cannot get a connection.

Any Ideas?

Try this first to see whether it helps:

Edit: Just saw that you reinstalled windows. Make sure you have the right and up to date drivers. Have you tried a different NIC after the windows reinstall? Different cables, etc.? HTH

I had a known working nic still installed when I reinstalled XP. It is a linksys nic whos drivers are included within xp. Device manager shows it as working fine. Unplugged my pc and moved the cable direcly over to this pc and it would not connect on either the linksys or the onboard nic.

i know that my PC likes NICs in 1 slot and 1 slot only...move it around a bit and see what happens

I have no idea as to why this happens...but it does.
