Downloading becomes very slow. Please help..

Ever since i update my windows xp to SP2 and installed window defender my downloading becomes very slow especially my bit comets downloads. Is it because of these sp2 and window defender thingy that causes this problem? The speed of downloading is way too slow compared to my previous downloading speed. Any help?

Windows XP SP2 installs the windows firewall...doublecheck your settings to make sure nothing that is getting blocked that shouldn't be. HTH

SP2 also limits the number of half-open tcp/ip connections to 10, it was infinite before that. There is a patch floating around the internet to change it to 50, seems to make torrents go faster for me.

Hi, i checked the firewall and selected the options for allowing bitcomet for connecting. However it remain the same.
Mojo, the tcp/ip thingy is for bitcomet engine or the windows itself? How do i check it? Where to i get the patch that you stated? Thanks !!

Well i hate to say this. I downloaded the patch and installed .. Follow the steps given but to my dismay it still remain the same. Sigh. What more could i do?

What readings do you get? What is your ISP's advertised speeds?

BitTorrent depends on the connection speed of the hosts as well as your ability to maintain a connection to them. It's possible the slowdown has nothing to do with your connection at all.

Ya. This is what i thought. But seems that surfing also affected. Page open quite slow. Furthermore my previous average downloading speed is around 30 to 60 kbs which is not very fast but still acceptable. And guess what?, my current downloading speed had drop to a staggering average of 1kbs to 10kbs max!!! This is way too slow.. BTW the speed of my broadband is 512k .

Is your browsing slow while you're running bittorrent? That's caused by bittorrent maxing out your upload bandwidth. Keeping in mind that there are 8 bits in a byte, and your ISP specifies speed in bits while your computer uses bytes, limit the upload used by bittorrent to half or less of the upload speed your ISP provides you.

Their can be a problem of data transfer between the ISP server and his computer. Just click
on the "Local Area Connection" Icon on the right side of the task bar and see whether you are recieving the packets or not? If the packets sent are more then the packets recieved, then their is something wrong with bandwidth or the service of ISP that you are using.

That's not how we see it here. You are entitled to your opinion but we don't do things this way here. It's a lot less of a nuisance than 3rd party software firewalls.

You can disable the XP firewall and use a 3rd party piece of software and see if that works. But if you are behind a router you should be fine without a firewall. Also try changing you torrent client to something else like utorrent and see if that helps your download speed.
