Hello, I have a 2wire dsl modem that is both a modem and a router with wireless also. I have had great luck with the modem so far
but the help section for enabling the public ip adresses verses the dynamic leased adresses is a little vauge. i run a 23/7 dedicated server for a game and also on that same machind a 24/7 voice server for chat during play. about once a week my ip address lease expires (i think) and i then get a new ip address. Well now everyone has to re config to be able to connect. This machine is my dmz enables one and this is driving me crazy. any help would be very much appreciated.thanks razzamatazz1234 (a very frustrated online racer) |

You may have to purchase a static IP address from your ISP. I would contact them first.

doctorgonze,
Do ISP also give static IP addresses to their clients? As far as I know they have DHCP Servers that dynamically assigns IP addresses to client machines. |

ISPs can, and do, offer(sell) static IPs to customers, mainly to business customers who require a fixed presence on the web.

mbossman,
what problem will their be if they get dynamic IP configurations from DHCP Servers, they can still use internet without problem with dynamic IP address? Do u mean to say that static IP addressing is important for B2B and B2C businesses where the enterprizes and major Companies have their websites on internet and for websites they need a non changing (static)IP address? I hope my question is clear, pls clarify. |

There's no problem unless you need remote access, as is the case in a web server.
If you don't need that, a dynamic IP doesn't matter, because all of the connections are initiated from inside the network. DSL generally defaults to this method. You have to purchase a static IP. You have 2 options: 1) get (buy) a static IP address (the best option) or 2) get a DNS name resolution program. This adds a layer of complication to the system. It's best to just lease the static IP. Qwest leases one to my company for around $10/month I think.

ITLover, the IP is still "dynamic" in the sense that it's assigned automatically via DHCP, but it's static in that the ISP guarantees that it won't change if you're paying for this type of service.

as an extension of mojo's comment: the static IP addresses are defined (by the provider) as being in their IP range but outside the scope of the DHCP server. so once assigned, by the provider, the DHCP server doesn't, in error, issue that address to some other user.
telegramsam hit it right on the head: you can use the dynamic DNS service to keep your DNS resolutions current but that ads time to the transaction and with a high traffic site that added time rapidly scales out of control. |

Thanks to all for your explanations, u guys mean to say that only when we try to access a computer remotely over the internet, the dynamic IP configuration is not useful because the IP address changes unlike in Static IP addressing where IP address remains constant and you can access the computer remotely over the internet using static ip address of the destination computer, am i right?
But in the case of dynamic ip configuration, the computer is restarted and if you know the new IP address of the destination computer, then you can access it remotely over the network. mobo means to say that the static ip given is dynamically assigned by DHCP, well I was talking about the dynamic IP configuration of DHCP where IP address changes |

OK i host both a voice chat server and a 24/7 gaming server-i get one static IP (i looked up my service contract and its clearly states the 1 static ip part) in the dsl service that i am currently paying for and then any other PC's i connect are dns enabled and get the address from a range assigned by the DHCP. but i have figured out a simple way for anyone that needs to connect to see what the new ip'S are, so the hell with it for now
the problem is that my so called static keeps changing bout every 2 weeks-i have contacted SBC yahoo and they told me it changes for security reason and thats all i have gotten out of them. anyway got a another question--for about 6 months now whenever i try to connect to my favorite game servers if i am in a server by itself i always seem to kill it and get a UDP socket error -this seems to have started right about the same time i got an automatic update to the firmware on my 2wire modem/router- -anywhere that i can dump this firmware and go back to the old? or does anyone know where to find such firmware? i checked both the sbc help and the 2wire site and got no real answers.

If you are bound and determined to run servers on a DSL connection, what you should really do is get rid of that 2Wire and get a standard bridge modem and a quality 3rd party router (like a Linksys WRT54GL with dd-wrt firmware). Put the server in the router's DMZ.
If you are paying for a static IP, you should have a static IP, not one that changes every 2 weeks. |
