websites cannot be found
Hey everybody,
A friend of mine is having PC problems. He did not give me much information, except that he has Windows XP, and Verizon DSL. He said that he is able to visit his home page, but when he clicks on any of his favorites or any other website, he either gets "Page timed out" or "Page cannot be found" or "Server cannot be found"(even when he tries to visit his home page). So, I asked him during that time, what is happening to your router? He said the lights are normal when this occurs. So then I asked him, did Verizon do a Line test for you? And he said Yes, and it cleared out OK. So when this problem occurs, he cannot visit any website. So then I asked him "When does this problem go away?" he replies "I usually just wait a couple of days and it gets back up and running just fine", so I go "Do you have to reboot your computer, router, or anything like that?" and he goes "Nope". The browser that he is using is Microsoft Internet Explorer. Pardon me for not providing any system details of his PC. That is the best accurate information I can get you guys of the problem based on what he said. If you guys need more information, I can e-mail him and ask him. TIA, Matt |

Is he getting an IP? Can he access his router config page? If so, what IP is the router getting?

Thanks for the reply, Dave. I have e-mailed him and asked him that question. But last night, he told me that he was able to get into the router configuration page. When he e-mails me back, he wil let me know what IP address his router gets the moment the problem occurs.
Thanks once again, Matt |

Try rebooting/recycling the router and/or the modem when the system does not get any internet.

It could also be a DNS problem, the first piece of info I would want to know is if he is using dhcp from the router to the PC's and then the thing to do is a command line ipconfig when the problem is happening and also access the router status page and between those two pieces of info when the problem is occuring we can tell if the problem is just between the router and the PC or between the router and the ISP.
