Slow when using wireless router

I'm using Rogers Cable Internet (Express package, which promises 5.0Mbps). The cable modem connects to a router (not wireless), which outputs to my desktop computer, and also to a wireless router, which my laptop uses.

The desktop can get speeds up to 600kb/s, but my laptop through the wireless has been getting max 60kb/s. The wireless router is a LinkSys 2.4Ghz.

The thing is, we had just switched to a new cable modem. With the old cable modem, I was getting up to 175kb/s through the wireless. Then Rogers sends us a letter (for no reason) saying that we should switch to one of their new modems, which will increase the speed, they say. Then I simply hook up the new modem into the old configuration (I didn't do any further config), and now I'm getting 60kb/s through the wireless router.

What might be the problem?
1. Need to do some configuration to my wireless router?

What are the mfr and model numbers of your router, cable modem and wireless router?

Here are the details:

CABLE MODEM:
- Scientific Atlanta, WebSTAR cable modem
- DPC2100R2 Series

ROUTER (non-wireless):
- SMC Barricade
- Model SMC7004ABR

WIRELESS ROUTER:
- Linksys Wireless Access Point Router, 4-Port Switch, 2.4GHz
- Model BEFW11S4

Try this first (if you haven't already): Restart your entire network. Shut everything down, and turn on each device, beginning with the cable modem and working toward the computers. Wait for at least 1 minute before turning on the next device.

That linksys wireless router has NAT and security protocols that are safe for home use. You might consider using it for your router and wireless server and taking the SMC Barricade out of the loop entirely. I actually use that same wireless router at home, and it serves a VPN, a print server, 5 computers and one or more wireless computers. It's always pretty speedy.

Don't use 2 routers - just use one. You are getting conflicts.
