Wireless network: access denied - have read sticky

Hello.

I am trying to set up a network btwn. my laptop and desktop. I just moved. Before I moved, I had the network set up perfectly with two desktops. NetBEUI is installed, security settings are set (one is XP Pro, one Home (Media Center). I can see every shared resource on both machines, but cannot access any of them. Both machines are connected wirelessly, using a Westell modem from Verizon. I have only MAC address filtering, no other security, same as my old residence.

Any help would be appreciated.

Also, on my XP Pro Desktop, I see two sets of all resources, one named Desktop (computer name), the other 'Unknown'.

Ok, more information: the 'Unknown' set of resources are listed as \\Main\*resource, which is what my XP Pro Desktop's 'computer name' used to be. I've changed it to just plan 'Desktop'. So My Network Places shows both sets of resources, one for the old Main computer name, one for the new Desktop name. How would I erase all traces of the Main resources?

Ok, another update: I deleted the resources from My Network Places. I re-ran the Network Setup Wizard and now cannot see any network resources in My Network Places, only local resources.

Uninstall any 3rd party firewalls and make sure file and print sharing is enabled in the XP firewall's exception list.

I have XP's firewall turned off. I have Zone Alarm installed on both, but have networked with ZA for years.

For more information, the Laptop can't even see it's own C drive in My Network Places.

Uninstall ZA.

Done. And nothing works. Also, the laptop still can't even see all of its own resources in My Network Places.

Next?

Reinstall the drivers for the laptop's network adapter.

Have you tried using Ethernet instead of wireless to see if it's a Windows issue or a wireless issue?

have you set the "enable NETBIOS over TCP/IP" option in the Wireless Card TCP/IP properties\Advanced tab\ WINS tab?

Ok guys, everything seems to be 'decent' for now. I did have NetBIOS enabled. However, one problem still remains: The laptop's C drive, although shared, doesn't show up in My Network Places. My Documents does, but not the C drive. I've turned off sharing and turned it back on for the C drive, and it just won't show up.

Any suggestions?

The default administrative share will not show up. You have to create a new share if you want to share the whole drive.

Fair enough. One last question (hopefully), how do you get Windows Firewall to allow programs full access, even when they're listed in its exceptions (I have a peer-to-peer program whose downloads are stopped completely while using Windows Firewall, even though it's listed on the exceptions list)?

Don't use windows firewall. If you have a firewall between your WAN and your LAN then you shouldn't need a firewall. I always disable windows firewall because it sucks and it always blocks programs and it usually doesn't allow "allowed traffic" to go through.
