Hi,
My friend has 3 computers and 2 laptops and he wants a good fast wireless router, He plays alot of games, and will be gaming on one of the laptops also. All but one desktop needs to be wireless. What would you recommend as a fast router. these are the routers we have considered DIR-855 > Dual Band Draft N Wireless Router DGL-4300 > Wireless 108G Gaming Router DIR-635 > RangeBooster N 650 Router All he needs is basic security, And it needs to be fast Now im not sure but wouldnt the DIR 855 be the fastest offering faster transfer rates and longer range than the gaming router, but i dont know much so if anyone could help that would be great! Oh and he is open to linksys and netgear etc. if they are going to be faster i am just used to dlinks! |

I'd second glc's recommendation. N is still too immature and the products just aren't reliable. Get that router and throw DD-WRT on it and you won't have any regrets.

I'll third that. With DD-WRT the WRT54GL is just an awesome router -- best bang for the buck out there. If you really need gigabit, just buy a separate gigabit switch to hook your pc's into and uplink it to the router. HTH

Ok just another Question; I know that up to 4 wired computers can connect to the routher (WRTGL) but hor many wireless computers can hook up to a wireless router?

I'm not quite sure exactly how many, but if I I remember correctly from what I saw in the DD-WRT firmware options it is over a hundred.

The max number of wireless connections is lilke 255 or something around there. Now if that many computers where trying to play WoW or torrent at the same time you'd have a problem, but realistically in a home situation you can connect as many wireless devices as you need.

Most consumer grade wireless routers will choke on more than 25 wireless connections. You can uplink it to a switch and connect a whole ton of wired computers.
