wierd connection problem this morning

Hi, I don't know if this is the right forum but...
I logged on to my computer, everything was fine. then I lost my internet connection. I went into my network places and checked all the connections and everything was working fine, I had activity on my cable modem and rebooted several times with no luck. I checked the event log and there weren't any errors. I tried to use system restore several times and it wouldn't let me saying to try a new date which I did 3 times. Finally I tried clicking on the link on the IE7 no connection page to fix the problem...it did!
This is very strange and have never had this happened before, this is a new build that has been running flawlessly for about a month.
I have xp pro, norton internet security (I know I should get rid of it, but I am going to use up the subscription time first) and spybot w/tea timer.
Anyone have any ideas? Could it be norton or windows updates, spyware or something like this?

Is the cable modem connected directly to the computer or do you have a router in between? What model is the cable modem?

Modem: Old Motorola surfboard
Router: Netgear rangemax WPN824

You need to reboot the modem and router when that happens.
