find out what brand and model number the router is. Generally matching the brand and band it transmitts on is best.

OK.
I think it's a linksys. But I don't even know how wi-fi cards are interfaced with desktops, or if it's even called a wi-fi in this case. Is it USB? PCI? What are they even called? Do they work the same way as the one on my laptop? Can I pick up any signal in the area? Maybe you guys could give me some links to some items. Thanks |

They come in both the pci and usb varieties but if you have a spare pci slot I would go that route. PCI is much more reliable than usb wireless in my experience. In general, I've found usb networking to have many more problems than traditional methods.
Something like this would work nice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833124115 |

PCI Wireless cards are far superior to USB ones. They work in the same way as the adapter in your laptop, in fact, it will probably pick up a signal even better, as they have external aerials. Something like this would be a good choice:
EDIT: Beaten to it by Kilgoretrout. His suggestion is a good one. FK

thanks Kilgo.
I wanna go with this D-link I found that's $20 cheaper. People seem to like enough. http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16833127145 I don't wanna drop $50 The USB one's seem to be waaaay cheaper. They will still work. Right? This should only be temporary internet until I get hooked up. thanks again Last edited by PCNOOB; 02-22-2007 at 02:28 PM. |

The D-Link would be a better temp choice than USB.

I wouldn't bother with USB wireless networking even for a temporary solution. That D-Link is only $20 after rebate.
