Please Help! How do I fix a corrupted internet connections?
Hi all, for two weeks now I have had no internet connection on my desktop. I thought it was my wireless PCI card or a bad PCI slot. I replaced both the card and new slot, however I still get the message which reads "the file or directory C:\ program fiels\ Internet Explorer\ Connection Wizard is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the chkdsk utility" whenever I restart my computer. I have tried several different things including runing hijack, IE6, and even IE7! I get the infamous red "X" through both my LAN connection when I am directyl connected and I also get it on my wireless setting icon as well. Please help I am out of ideas!
Regards, ET1 |

ET1, welcome to PC Mechanic, The X usually means the device is disabled, have you tried enabling them in device manager, or through network connections.
Try reinstalling / updating NIC drivers. Mike

Have you RUN chkdsk as recommended? Open a command prompt and type CHKDSK /R - answer all prompts with a Y and reboot.

For the wireless what router are you using? Have you tried a soft reset (turning the router off than on) or a hard reset (pressing the reset button on the back of the router). Also when you get to status on the wireless connection have you checked it IP settings, they should be set to 'Automatically Detect IP' and 'Automatically detect DNS' unless you have set up a static IP. Another thing to do is type in '192.168.0.1' (for D-Link) or 192.168.1.1 (for linksys) and make sure the settings in the router are ok.

Yukon, he's gotta get his network connection enabled before any router settings will make any difference.

Yes, Yukon my wireless card is picking up connectivity but it dose not allow me to connect to the internet, the red x still appreas. There are no specs within the details of the wireless and LAN settings. How would I reclaim those details? I compared the settings to my laptop and both my wireless and LAN icons have specs within the details porton of the icon, but there missing on my desktop. Any ideas to reinstall the specs within the details portion of both the wireless and LAN settings?
Thanks! |
