Slow conection problems.

I find my Internet speeds have slowed down alot and I can't figure out why. I don't know if it's on my end or what's the case. My download speeds are near normal but it's page loading that seems to take forever. Doesn't matter if I use I. E or firefox. Firefox will load half the page then just stall and I have to reload the page. It's getting very annoying and its becoming time consuming trying to browse while the Internet is bogging me down. one minute it will speed up and then next it goes a little faster then dial up.

Is there anyway to rule out the router over the computer blame it on the ISP ?

Be sure that all of your connections are good and reset the ROUTER.

How " clean " is your computer? Have you been running a Spyware cleanser, a Virus cleanser, defragging regularly?

Now that I really think about it. The speed of my net started to go to crap after I started to use proxy servers regularly..I don't know if this would do anything to my net.

That's easy enough to find out - disable them and direct connect. Clear the caches, flush your DNS, and reboot the router.

thats terrible speed,
were you running any other program/downloads at the same time as the speed test?
Rogers sucks, actually Cable H-speed sucks too.
also Rogers shuttles their brandwith and blocks certain ports as well as websites.

Ottawa, eh? I go by there every Friday night.[from Montreal back to my home in Toronto]

That is bad. Try bypassing the router and connect directly to the modem and see what happens. This will validate/condemn the router.

I can't get my network card to enable and work. I never used the onboard and I just used my el cheapo airlink network card. Could it be a network card problem ?

It could be - but how is it working with the router if your network card doesn't work?

I don't know. I reformated. Went and got a Dlink. Then the Dlink would not keep active net conection with router. So I've installed brand new drivers from the dlink site and I'm crossing my fingers this stablizes my internt.

I was not able to due to the onboard network not working as I did try and it would not connect.

It should work now with a clean install of window. However I have not tried yet as the install of the newer drivers for the d-link card have stabilized the Internet. Can try tomorrow but if my net is stable and getting good results on speed test then there wouldn't be much point of disconnection everything and dragging it up to my room to hook up the modem to my pc. Believe had the router and modem be mine and in my room I would of tried it right away.

Also the router and modem are in my roommates room and he is gone out for the night and my other roommate is home using the net. So I can't disconnect the net.

If your wondering how I knew It was a hardware issues well 2 things. I did a speed test on my phone and it got good results and then I did a quick one on my other room ates laptop and it got very good results to. Then after a clean install i was still getting bad speed test results

Thanks for the suggestions once again!

Wait a minute - is this wired or wireless?

I guess I just assumed everyone knew it was wireless. It never accrued to mention it was wireless as pretty much everyone has wireless these days. So yes the router and my net card are both dlink wireless.

We can't assume it's wireless - you have to tell us those things up front. That's why we keep bugging people for DETAILS.

If another wireless computer in the same house has good speeds and yours doesn't - then it certainly is a problem with your wireless adapter and not the router. This is making more sense now. YOUR speed test is going to suck if your roomies are hitting the connection hard though.

This may not be practical for someone in your situation, but I keep a 150 foot CAT5 patch cable around for troubleshooting possible wireless issues - you can temporarily string it out and direct connect to see what happens. It's also a lot easier to troubleshoot any kind of networking issues when you have physical access to the hardware.

We cannot assume this ever. I personally loathe wireless for the poor speed and reliability and cherish the ability to do rapid data transfer on my gigabit wired network.
