dialup with cell phone
I would like to know if there is an adapter out there somewhere that will connect a cell phone to an external dial up modem, my reason is because I don't have long distance service on my land line and do have long distance service on my cell phone and I sometimes need to send a fax to a different city other than local...TIA...GaryD

It's possible, but it's a lot easier and more reliable to use a calling card and your land line to send a long distance fax. Calling card has a tab in your dialing rules, just create a new location and switch over to it when you need to use a calling card. The cell phone would not connect to the modem, you would have to get a USB connector kit and use the phone itself as a modem. Your cell provider may block attempted use of the phone in this manner, mine does.
Why don't you just get pay-as-you-go long distance service on your land line? |

Just so you know, it is very possible to setup your cellphone as a modem, as long as the phone supports this. If you get the data cable for your cell phone odds are that XP, if this is what you're using, will pick it up and see it as a modem.
When I was in the military I did this pretty often when we were running missions state side. The US Army moves pretty slow (don't flame me for saying this... but in my 5 years in nothing got done quickly) and they didn't always have the necessary LAN drops for us when we arrived on location to perform our duties. The cell phone coupled with a free dial-up ISP was great if it was only needed for short periods.

KS - Cingular now blocks use of a cell phone to use a dialup ISP in this fashion. They did this a couple of years ago. You can only use their EDGE network.

They are doing that to conserve bandwidth for their voice customers. EDGE was built for data. Not shady, just a sound business decision.
