Playstation 3 to PC file sharing...

Hi,

I'm a noob at networking, in that today is the first time I have ever bought a router. (normally I have just one PC connected). I am however familiar with ftp servers, I have even had one setup on my pc at home that I could remote access.

My question is this: I have a Playstation 3 coming this friday, and I want to be able to browse with it (which I understand it can do) and basically download pics and mp3s from my pc which is connected to it via a D-link DGL4100 gaming router (which so far I love!).

The way I thought of would be to setup and ftp server on the pc with one passworded folder containg the files, and then simply enter the ftp address into the playstation's browser. Is that going to work? Is there an easier way? Any help will be immensely appreciated.

Wendi.

If the PS3 has a full fledged browser then it should support ftp as well. As long as FTP is properly setup on your other machine you should be able to connect via the browser from the PS3. Google around a bit though, may there is a way to simply map the shared folder from the PC to the PS3. HTH

Hmm...I've got the ftp server running without name and password on my pc. I have tested it with firefox and it allows anonymous access from a web browser without trouble. When I type the ftp address in the playstation's browser it just gives me "about blank". Does that mean that the ps3 doesn't support ftp? If so, what could I do to connect the two. The shared folder didn't work out, because I would have to install windows on the ps3 to do it. Any ideas?

You probably have to use the FTP server's local IP address to connect.

It works with Firefox from a different computer or the same computer?

To find your local IP address, open a command prompt and type ipconfig.

Well. I have been trying it today from the same pc, but I had my dad get access to it before from another pc. I have been trying the local ip, but I also have the subnet mask and the standard gateway ip....will I need those in any way? If so, how would I exactly enter that info in the browser? Could it be some setting in my router? Is there another way to connect the thing to my pc without ftp?

I have tried that IP in various ways. It's the correct one, but now I realize I am not able to reach my ftp server anymore from ANY computer except the one that is running the server, which leads me to believe that it is a setting in my router that I need to fix. My server says it is listening on port 21, so do I need to do something there? Also, what do the subnet mask IP and the Gateway IP have to do with this problem?

It may be a software firewall issue.
