I have tried unsuccessfully to get the internet to run on my Desktop PC in either Wired or Wireless mode (see specs below):
HP Desktop m7250n Windows XP Media Center Edition Intel Pentium D 820 Model 2.8 GHz Ethernet 10Base-T/100Base-TX by Realtek Fast Ethernet Card 56 Kbps Fax / modem PCI Plug-in card MoBo Chipset type Intel 945P Express 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM 128 MB ATI 9600 built in WiFi b+g USB with RP SMA antenna Ok, now I have done everything to this PC. I have 1 - Cleared the DNS, IP Address, etc. 2 - Performed Registry, Virus, Spyware, etc cleaning. 3 - Run WinSock 1.x, that is the latest version. 4 - Tried a System Restore. 5 - Beating my head against the table. 6 - Unistalling IPv6 so to reuse IPv4 7 - Pinged home i.e. 127.0.0.1 and it works fine for both adaptors NOTHING FREAKIN' WORKS! 'Sigh' Now my only other option that I see is to use my restore discs to reinstall but that seems rather unnecessary since it is just the internet. I tried the WiFi USB on a different PC and it works fine, so I have zeroed in on the problem being software related. The PC worked fine before I moved then when I open it up again the internet did not work. The logs are useless since they are so old (we moved 3 months ago). I don't know if I installed anything or if something bad got in but I don't believe it has since I have gotten clean results after multiple searches. The PC before and after the move was behind a Linksys WRT54G router receiving a T-1 LAN signal and was configured to recieve both wired and WiFi signals from it just fine. In my new apartment I have Verizon DSL @ 768Kpbs. I tried to hard wire it from the modem and from the router with the same results. I cannot receive nor send anything. The router is by the way not working for wired or wireless and I tried it with and without security features (WEP and MAC Filter). I tried turning on and off my firewall that being ZoneAlarms 6.0 to no avail as well. The only thing I know that comes up now is that the IP address cannot be renewed since it cannot connect to the internet. I cannot force it to renew as far as I know. Suggestions, opinons, commentary, thoughts, attacks, or whatever may be helpful would be most welcome. This persistant problem has been frustracting me for some time and I would really like to resolve this. P.S. Eternal gratitude to whom-so-ever may aid me in my journey. - Dr._Faustus |

Did you get a new router and using the same modem? Turn the modem off for 10 seconds (remove any battery)
Have you tried someone else's wireless connection (if any are available and unprotected)? Pinging 127.0.0.1 won't do anything. That IP is consistent for every computer. Ping your network IP (192.168.*.*) Also, ping your router. Ping your DNS. EDIT: If you are using DSL, make sure PPPoE is enabled in your router's settings and if the ISP requires authentication then put the user/pass. Last edited by ChoboSeki; 04-02-2007 at 02:56 PM. |

I tried pinging other devices, i.e. DNS's and router (the router has been the same one used for both my old home and new one) but to no avail. I don't remember exactly what the cmd prompt said but something along the lines of no packets sent or received.
My laptop works fine in both wired and wireless mode as do all the other house computers, just the HP Desktop won't work. The DSL modem is new yes but all other PC's work fine with it (even Macs, ewww). I tried the whole shut off the modem and router for a minute thing many times but the Desktop's internet still did not work. The modem and router are configured fine since PPPoE is enabled over a bridge between the two devices and all the other PC's run well off of them both. Still stuck but thanks for any help. |

So it's just the one computer?
Do a malware and virus scan. If you have any system restore points, try the last one. |

I have no usable restore points.
And again as I laid out in my initial post there is no spyware, virus, malware, etc of any sort on the PC as determined by multiple scans. So yet again I am stuck. Further aid is appreciated. |

chk for loose pc card?
U mentioned having moved, doesn't seem likely that something is critically wrong w/equip. Loose pc card? I feel your frustration. Your encryption options: 128bit ASCI vs 128bit HEX? Channel setting?

Maybe it is the card but that would not explain why the WiFi is out too. Also the card is still flash the LED whenever a CAT5 is plugged in.
I'll get the ipconfig stats to you guys ASAP. Thanks again. |

If your connecting but not able to surf the problem could be Zone Alarm. I had that issue last year, I could connect to the net but when I tried to surf I got nothing but "This page can't be displayed". I also was (and still do) using Zone Alarm and like you I turned it off but no help. I tried everything you did plus calling HP and nothing helped. I then starting playing around with Zone Alarm, clicked on Firewall and opened the Zones tab, thats where Zone Alarm keeps your connection configuration for net and trusted access. I deleted the two entires I had listed then I reconnected. Zone Alarm asked where to keep this connection, trusted or net and I selected and boom, I was surfing the net again. Not saying this is your fix but its worth a try, like I said, I too turned Zone Alarm off the first round of trouble shooting I did and that didn't work. I hope this helps your problem.

I hope you've found a solution to your problem by now. If not, I hope this helps.
Go to your router's basic setup page. Go to the "Network Setup" section, about half way down the page. Change your router's IP to 192.168.2.1. I also have Verizon DSL and was also frustrated by a problem simliar to yours. Currently, my network is configured with the modem in bridge mode, and the router using PPPoE to connect with the above IP. Good luck. T |
