"messenger service"

I'm not sure this is the place for this thread, please move it if not...
I just put a Windows 2000 machine back online...connected to MS and downloaded the latest updates...I have Avast AV aboard and did a virus definition update.
I'm not sure where I got this new bug, but I can't seam to get rid of it. Avast didn't take care of it, although it did find malware and a couple bugs...again, I have no idea where they came from, this pc has been offline for about two years.
Here's the problem:
I keep getting popups that say, "Message from SYSTEM to ALERT on 4/13/2007 3:10:33 AM
STOP! IMMEDIATE ATTENTION REQUIRED
Windows has found CRITICAL SYSTEM ERRORS.
Download Registry Cleaner from: www.clean32.com
FAILURE TO ACT NOW MAY LEAD TO DATA LOSS AND
CORRUPTION!"
There are two other popup message windows that I have to close after I close this one.
does anyone know what this is and where it comes from? but more important, how do I get rid of it?
It's rather suspicious, I only get the popups when I connect to the internet.
any and all help greatly appreciated....

So this thing popped up without you being online? Do you have an "always on" connection?

Grab Spybot here: http://www.spybot.info/en/download/index.html

This works with w2k, and should find the offender.

If not, check out your startup items and processes on a normal boot, identify which process gives you the popups and whack it in safe mode.

EDIT: Should have refreshed. I guess you found out the easy way. I googled clean32.com and boy it doesn't look good. Just a pest in so many languages!

How does it get on your machine when messenger is on? random IP attempts by other bots

I just got rid of this Messenger thing. It is
not recognised by Adaware or Spybot S&D or AVG.
I got rid of it as you said by disabling the service.
What is this ? Can somebody put a label on it for us ?
Its pimping for some security software site .

You should not get scared because of this. This normally happens when you reinstall 2000/XP without SPs and when you go online the messenger service alerts you and pops that message. Its not really a spyware and the only solution for this is to turn off the messenger service or ran Windows Updates.

This is different- some advertiser ? hijacks the Messenger Service.
It comes up with urgent warnings and tells you to go to regfixit.com,
fixupregistry.com , patchupdate.info etc. You get numerous pop ups
repeating within a few minutes, when you try to close the window.
Yes , the Messenger Service is a legitimate feature of Windows but it
is being exploited by software sellers.

This is a security flaw but this was fixed with a security update. So its always advisable to ran Windows Update after you reinstall OS.
