How do I go about pinging a nother computer which is conected to the internet from my conection to the other person's conection.to check out the conection.

open a DOS window and type (without the quotes): "ping" and then the domain name or the IP address of the other device.

Just be aware that the computer on the other end could either have a software firewall (Zone Alarm, Windows Firewall, etc) or a hardware firewall (Cisco PIX/ASA, Watchguard, etc) that may block ICMP packets. ICMP is the type of packet that ping and traceroute uses.
