Question My computer apparently hates cat5 cables...

No idea why, but AS SOON as I plug in a cat5 cable from my router (which is connected cat5 to the modem) my computer shuts off. I've tried different cables and get the same results. Also, if I already have the cable plugged in before startup, the computer turns on for 2 seconds, then shuts back off. I have no idea why this is doing it. Never had trouble before since it was ran wirelessly off my folk's main pc.

The 2 second shutoff is indicative of a power supply crowbar shutdown because you are drawing excessive current on some supply.
This is generally because something is shorted or grounded out. And since you were not using wire netwoking before it sounds like it may be the NIC.

Check the A/C power supply grounding, sounds like you may have mis-wired outlets or a floating ground.

Is the LAN connection on board (part of the motherboard) or PCI card?

On board. The MOBO is an Intel DP965LT.

Not really sure what NIC is. Care to explain?

FWIW, it's not really a big deal since I now have it set up on my house's wireless network. It just bothers me that it does it and makes me scared the mobo may be going dead. I just built this computer last Summer.

NIC=network interface card. Or in your case the network components on the motherboard itself.
