Angry Fire Can not ping network

I have 2 Computers one has xp home the other xp pro .They bothg connect into a D link router. Model DI 624

IP address 192.168.100.2
Sub mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway nothing.

The other Computer has xp pro.

Ip address is 192.168.0.155
submask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.0.100

I have read that you can not network using xp home is this correct.
When I ping from xp home the comand is (ping 192.168.100 ) the pinging page comes up fo about 5 secondsand .
When I ping back from the other computer XP pro comand ( ping 192.168.0.155) the smae happens. I have used repair but the same happens.

I am using straight through cable's

XP's firewall blocks pings, which is why you're not able to ping the computers. XP home works fine in a network, it just has less capabilities if you try to use it as a router than XP pro does. Why do you need to ping the computers anyways?

Pinging each computer allowes me to see that they are talking to each other.
I am trying to learn about networking as my next step is to set up a firewall using a small computer then setup a server using the same computer.
Thanking you for your help.

Nice to see someone interested in how stuff works instead of just plugging in a box and forgetting about it. If you want to make a firewall out of an old computer check out IPCop. Iv'e been using it for a few years and it works like a dream.

The problem is that your ip's are on different networks.
Ip address is 192.168.0.155
IP address 192.168.100.2

You need to have both computers on the same network, either 192.168.0.x or
192.168.100.x network.

With both computers plugged into the same switch, they will never see each other.

Could catch great one. Gregrae, did you assign the IP addresses manually? If the router is handing them out via DHCP you should not have gotten those IP addresses on different networks. Perhaps it was just a typo.

yes ,its a class c network and both computers should have same network address.
And also the IP address of the routers interface should be in the default gateway of the WinXP home Computer.

In both cases, simply let the computer assign the network manually. You shouldn't need to override them with custom settings unless the DHCP server is malfunctioning.

Internal modems and ICS are not compatible with a router. If you must use an internal modem, replace the router with a switch or convert the router to a switch. The way to do this with a D-Link is log into it, change its internal IP address to 192.168.0.254 and disable its internal DHCP server, then use ICS to share the modem and control everything. Routers are designed to be used with external broadband modems. What's connected to the router's WAN/Internet port?

I don't think you read my last post. ICS is internet connection sharing, which you DO have enabled and is INCOMPATIBLE with a router.

Do you have dialup or broadband? If you have dialup and use an internal OR EXTERNAL modem, you MUST convert the router to a switch or replace it with a switch.

Have you replaced the router with a switch or converted the router to a switch yet?
