XP's firewall blocks pings, which is why you're not able to ping the computers. XP home works fine in a network, it just has less capabilities if you try to use it as a router than XP pro does. Why do you need to ping the computers anyways?

Pinging each computer allowes me to see that they are talking to each other.
I am trying to learn about networking as my next step is to set up a firewall using a small computer then setup a server using the same computer. Thanking you for your help. |

Nice to see someone interested in how stuff works instead of just plugging in a box and forgetting about it. If you want to make a firewall out of an old computer check out IPCop. Iv'e been using it for a few years and it works like a dream.

Could catch great one. Gregrae, did you assign the IP addresses manually? If the router is handing them out via DHCP you should not have gotten those IP addresses on different networks. Perhaps it was just a typo.

yes ,its a class c network and both computers should have same network address.
And also the IP address of the routers interface should be in the default gateway of the WinXP home Computer. |

In both cases, simply let the computer assign the network manually. You shouldn't need to override them with custom settings unless the DHCP server is malfunctioning.

Internal modems and ICS are not compatible with a router. If you must use an internal modem, replace the router with a switch or convert the router to a switch. The way to do this with a D-Link is log into it, change its internal IP address to 192.168.0.254 and disable its internal DHCP server, then use ICS to share the modem and control everything. Routers are designed to be used with external broadband modems. What's connected to the router's WAN/Internet port?

The modem is a D-Link DFM-562E XP home IP address 192.168.0.1 No default gateway. XP pro IP address 192.168.0.155 Default gateway 192.168.0.100 Why is there no default gateway on the XP home PC The I p address Can I change the .155 of the XP pro to .2If sow how do I change this Ip address. This number only indicates the PC is that correct. Explain what numbers Can I Use in this part of the address. I am trying to understand the IP address numbers and what numbers can be changed and the systom continue;s to work. Thank you greg. Last edited by gregrae; 07-29-2007 at 10:36 PM. |

I don't think you read my last post. ICS is internet connection sharing, which you DO have enabled and is INCOMPATIBLE with a router.
Do you have dialup or broadband? If you have dialup and use an internal OR EXTERNAL modem, you MUST convert the router to a switch or replace it with a switch. |

Have you replaced the router with a switch or converted the router to a switch yet?
