WinSock XP Fix - should I try it?

First of all - Thanks for this great site! I ended up here while searching for info on a "windows forms parking window" window I kept getting every time I turned off my computer. I followed the fix given on the thread and my sluggish computer was brought back to life!

I'm hoping someone will be kind enough to help me with my current problem: trouble connecting to and then staying connected to the internet. I installed AVG a few weeks ago and am wondering if that could be the problem. After doing a search here, I found a few threads about similar issues with internet connectivity and AVG - also one about Zone Alarm, which I am also using. A couple people recommended using WinSock XP Fix - would this maybe work for me? What exactly would I look for to know whether or not this could be a fix for my problem? I don't know enough to know whether or not this is a "try it and see" fix or something that will end up causing more issues if used when it shouldn't be. Also, if I run this, what side-effects can I expect? Will I lose any settings, will I need to reinstall anything, do I need to back anything up first?

Thanks for any help anyone might be able to give!

Would help to know what type of connection you have for the internet: dial-up/DSL/Cable. The Win-sock fix is more for dial-up. For DSL and cable modems, the first tip is to unplug power from the modem, let it set for a few minutes and power back up. Once back up, it may help to reboot the PC. This sometimes clears problems withstaying connected.

Red face

Sorry! It's DSL....I think ....the computer is connected to a router, which I guess also works for the laptop - which is wireless, and for what it's worth isn't having any of these problems - don't know if that's important to know or not.

After installing AVG and running it, a couple viruses, or trojans, or worms, or whatever particular nasty thing AVG searches for, were found and they were recommended to be removed immediately.

After restarting the computer I am able to connect. If I close out of the connection and try back 10 min. or 10 hours later, it doesn't work, I have to restart the comp. Also, if I'm idle on a page for a particularly long time I get disconnected and have to restart to be able to get back on.

Also, in following the steps to fix the "windows forms parking window" issue I mentioned above, while in the list of programs to be started upon start up - I don't remember what that window was called - I also got rid of a few extra programs I THOUGHT I recognized as some I had uninstalled eons ago but would still give me pop-ups every time I restarted the computer. Hopefully I didn't mess something up there...

I'm not sure who this forum is geared toward - if this is a place for computer geniuses to get together and talk intelligently about networking and programming and "stuff" I have no clue about, I apologize and I promise I won't hang around pestering you with my very noobish questions....THANK YOU so much for your patience and if you need to know anything else in order to try to help me, ask away - I'll TRY to give you the answer you need!!!

Go ahead and try the winsock fix, it won't hurt anything so don't worry about that. When your connection dies, does the other laptop you mentioned still work or do no computers at all have internet access?
