Issues with laptop and internet connection..need some help please

I am having some issues with my girlfriends laptop, and her internet connection. Her network setup consisted of a main pc (which was her roommates pc) connected to the internet via a modem, and a wireless router for her laptop wifi connection. Last week her roommate took the pc when she moved out. So I connected her laptop to the internet via the wired ethernet cable, but it will not connect to the internet. I have some mild experience with pc's but not alot. I tried changing the settings but still no connection. She needs the internet for school starting up next week, and I have no idea how to get this connected. Can you network guru's help me please?

Answer

Disconnect the power cord to the modem and router.
Turn off the laptop.

Plug in the power cord to the modem and wait a couple of minutes.
Then plug in the power cord the router and wait a couple of minutes.
Then start up the laptop. Disable the wireless connection and enable the lan connection.

You should be good to go!

Some notebooks require the power cord to be plugged in to run the internal NIC, Dell's in particular.

Some A/V programs like Norton and McAfee for some reason don't allow you by default to change your network connection. Disable the A/V and see if you can connect then.
