Workgroup networking inconsistancies

I just got my new Sony TZ with Vista and was working on trying to network it with two of my other Windows XP systems when I ran into this problem with workgroup networking.

There are three systems total. Two are laptops, both are wirelessly connected to a router, one of the laptop is Vista and the other is XP. I have one desktop running XP wired to the router.

I use the workgroup name "MSHOME" for all of my computers. When I first opened up "my network places --> view network connections" on the XP systems, everything worked perfectly, except I couldn't see my Vista laptop.

My vista laptop, also workgroup "MSHOME", was only able to see itself.

After resetting all my XP networks using the "set up a home or office network" wizard, the "View network connections" started to give me this error message for a few minutes.

After that everything started to work. I didn't even touch anything. The vista computer could see the XP computers, vice versa, and the XP computers could still see each other.

After resetting the Vista laptop for reasons other than networking, the network started to break down. The computers could no longer see each other and the error message about started to come up on all the XP systems.

I tried turning off all my firewalls, which turned out to only be Mcaffee internet security, but nothing helped. I didn't have to change any of my firewall settings to get the network to work the first time.

I tried restarting everything, nothing helps. Sometimes I can get into the network but I can only see the computer in use itself in MSHOME.

Every computer had internet through this whole ordeal. The router does not have a password, never did.



I want to get my workgroup network working on all computers including the Vista laptop permanently without it fizzing out on me intermittently.

I also got a new laptop running Vista which was bundled with a free trial period of McAfee. I had very similar issues to what you are describing.

McAfee was removed, for other reasons, and I will test the workgroup again this evening to let you know if it has improved the situation.

I unistalled, restarted, but the problem still persisted.

As Ive said before, the networking did work briefly but now it's completely flat lined.

I was getting the same thing. Intermittent connectivity, almost like they weren't playing nicely together for some reason.

Make sure that McAfee is really gone. Look in Control Panel/Adminstrative Tools/Services and see if there are any services that start with McAfee that are still running. If they are stop and disable them and try to uninstall McAfee again.

You enabled Network Discovery in the Vista Machine?

McAfee is really gone. I found another antivirus program "Bit Defender" but I havn't installed it yet.

And yes, on my Vista laptop, Network discovery is turned ON.
