Use the username and password (or lack of a password) that you use to log into the XP box with locally.

If you're getting that message, then you do NOT have simple file-sharing enabled.

Let's get VERY specific.

On the XP box:

Control panel, folder options.

On the View tab, scroll down to the LAST checkbox -

Enable simple file sharing (recommended)

MUST be checked.

At this point it's possible that it's file permissions blocking you. Do you have the XP box set to make your files private? You could also try actually setting up a password for your account on the XP box, then when prompted enter that in.

With simple file sharing enabled, I believe you have to log in as Administrator in safe mode to be able to view and set permissions.

Actually, I was referring to the checkbox that says "make my files private" when you're editing user accounts, either by clicking your name at the top of the start menu or control panel>user accounts.

Well I have never seen anything like this.... I have done all of the stuff you guys told me to and more..One thing just occured to me ,on the 2k box I don't recall setting up a password but that logon box in 2k flashes very briefly(can't read it ,it's so fast ) as i recall there was some place in regedit that you could disable that I have looked but can't find it. That is, not have a logon for 2k

EURIKA !!!!!!

Multiple boot system ..so I went to XP pro set it up there(2k box) and it asked me to log on there.....BUT and a big but I could see in XP that it was taking me to the laptop via the guest account...So went back upstairs set the pass word for a guest account came back down stairs had set up the XP box upstairs with a zip file I could see it on the ubuntu/2k /XP pro machine.reboot into 2k box and repeated it and logged on as guest with pass word...I think some where along the line somebody said guest but it went over my head which isn't to hard at my age (although I'm not to bad for a 68 year old ) Anyway got it all working....Thanks to you guys glc and mojo..

Mojo there is only two boxes with the desk top being a multiple boot and the laptop upstairs..Hey buy the way I had asked in one of my post about getting rid of the win 2k log on I know it can be done I thought it was in regedit but I can't seem to find it ..

I will post this question in another post if need be, but since I had asked about it originally in this post because I thought it would be good to eliminate a possible issue...

I'm not really sure about the win2k login, but the guest account problem should have been taken care of by that thread I had with myself if you did eveything in it. After all this, glad to know it's working for you!

Hey floppyman tried both for my 2k box and reboot I still see the log on box momentarily, although I don't have to log on. Isn't there some way to get rid of it entirely ???

Probably not, just be thankful that you don't have to log on anymore.
