wireless networking win 2K and XP Pro

Have a wireless network setup ,no problem seeing or transfer files from the desk top shared folders to the laptop or printing from the laptop to associated printer on desktop.

However I can not seem to see or connect to the lap top from the desktop..

Does this make sense ???

Sticky thread:

http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=165490

This applies trying to connect *any* OS to a XP Pro box. You also have to make sure file and print sharing is enabled in the XP firewall exception list.

I don't think that link applies ...Desk top is running windows 2000 pro.... lap top is running XP pro. the lap top can see the desk top but not the other way around ???

The link EXACTLY applies - you have to do the group policy edit on the XP Pro box to allow any clients to access it from across the network without a password.

Now you need to make sure that you have NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled on all the PC's in the network. Open the Network Connections folder, right-click the local area network connection and click Properties, double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Click Advanced button then on the WINS Tab, click the Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button.

The next step is necessary on XP Pro to allow XP Home to connect to it. XP Home uses Simple File Sharing in which all authentication is done via the Guest account. For XP Pro to allow this you need to modify a Group Policy to allow blank passwords. Go to the Start Menu and click on Run. Type in gpedit.msc and click OK. Navigate to Computer Configuration / Windows Settings / Security Settings / Local Policies / Security Options. Now double click on Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only. Change this to Disabled and click OK.
In Xp I can not find a wins tab in the advance and as far as the gpedit.msc I ran it as exactly as written and on my 2k machine I still don't see the xp shared folders I have tried mapping to them etc...??

On the XP box, uninstall Sygate and use the Windows firewall.

Well, you haven't enabled simple file-sharing on the XP box then. Enable simple file-sharing.

Log in as administrator and change it.

Simple file sharing is found in folder options, view. Last check box.

It's not only in control panel. It's the tools menu at the top of any windows explorer window. Tools>Folder Options>View tab. It's the last option "Enable Simple File Sharing (Recommended)".

We are referring to the XP box, not the 2K box, that needs simple file sharing enabled. I think you are trying to change the settings we are telling you to on the wrong computer.

You have to make the changes in the XP box, not the 2k box. Enable simple filesharing ON THE XP BOX.

Did you edit the group policy ON THE XP BOX? Is file and print sharing checked in the firewall exception list ON THE XP BOX?

You do not have to map a drive but you DO have to go through My Network Places to see them, they don't just magically appear in My Computer.
