Laptop to PC
I am connecting a laptop to a pc using a db25 cable. I have installed the protocols and enabled file & print sharing on the laptop.
I cannot see it on the network. Do I need to insert a subst command in dos and change the laptop c:/ to d:/ to make this work? Help will be appreciated. Especially detailed info on the whole process in case I missed some important steps. Suggesting other hardware/software is not an option. Price is an object. So for what it's worth, this no frills setup can do, especially for simply transferring files from the laptop to the tower. Thanks, Dave |

If you are using a serial or parallel cable, you need to install and configure Direct Cable Connection on both machines.

Ok so how do I do this? Is it under add new hardware and do I still need to go through the network? Will I see the other computer in explorer and what do I look out for? All the details will really be appreciated because I have never done this before. Thanks much Dave H. |

Oh, it's a db25 cable male to male. Not sure if it's serial or parallel but they of course connect to both parallel port on both machines.
Thanks again Dave H. |

First, you can't use a straight through cable, you need a cable like
a laplink cable or what they call a pc-pc cable. its available in most electronics stores. once you have the correct cable, you need to install and configure Direct Cable Connection which is done through the add/remove program option in the control panel.

There's a lot of info at Start>Help on the Index tab and type in "direct cable connection".

I tried the process but here are the errors...
When I click on "View Host" on the Guest Computer I get error "\\17f1f99 is not accessible no error information is available. When I click again second error says "Not logged in. Next click says looking shared folders - cannot find shared folders. I did enable share on the host, the cable is a genuine Belkin DCC DB25 Mala/Male Parallel both hooked up to the parallel port of the host and guest and DCC installed from add remove program. I also installed Netbeui on both computers. Here are both computers configurations...seems to me like too many protocols are installed but I do not want to uninstall anything till I hear from an expert. Same Problem Here PC to Laptop
Have setup direct cable connection on both PC and Laptop but can't find clear instructions on what the Network properties need to look like or on the actual process for transfering files frm laptop to pc. One book says I have to setup a dialup connection but I don't think that is right for direct cable connection. On my laptop when I setup direct cable it automatically setup Network Neighborhood, so I proceeded to duplicate what the Network Properties looked like on my laptop to my pc but that did not work either. I have followed the instructions in start help or help directly in briefcase but I still come up with can't establish a connection. The direct cable uses the lpt1 printer port. Thanks all

Make sure both machines are in the same workgroup and have file and print sharing enabled, and the drives are shared with full access. Set one up as host and the other as guest - and the guest should be able to access the host through Network Neighborhood.
