no connection with wireless router.

Now this is a subject I know hardly anything about so I hope someone might be able to help.
A friend of mine downloaded the update to Windows live messenger about a week ago and when the computer shut down for the installation to complete, it wouldn't reboot and told her a DLL file was missing. Computer wouldn't even go into safe mode to try to do a restore.
She ended up doing a repair installation of Window XP and all seemed good apart from the fact that she cannot connect to the internet. She is hooked up via wireless connection to a main computer in the house which is on cable. The main computer is working fine and is connected to the internet ok.
She installed the software that she installed originally on her computer for her wireless connection and everything tells her that the installation is successful but the icon at the bottom of her screen is not lit up as it use to, it is greyed out.
everything else seems to be working just fine. Is there something she has overlooked or what should she try now. I am afraid I can't help her much with his cos I dont know much about wireless router and their connections.

make sure that the SSID is properly set on the PC.

Uninstall the wireless card drivers and software, shut the computer off, remove the wireless card, then follow the instructions for a fresh install.
