Odd connectivity problem
I started having connectivity trouble when I switched to this new wireless Ativa G AWGR54 router, basically what has conspired from this router is a heap of headaches. Anyways I have connectivity issues with certain programs like AOL instant messenger and communication programs like ventrilo. I get no connectivity from these programs or very limited. For instance I can log onto AOL and talk for 10 seconds and then I lose connectivity as if it the internet has cut out on me. So then I have to exit AOL and sign back in and the ironic part about it is I have no trouble actually connecting to the client but once I'm connected it loses its connectivity shortly after and basically ceases to work until I re establish a connection. Then it just ends up cutting out again shortly after. The same problem with some other programs I use, like ventrilo. Interesting enough my Firefox works fine I can surf the internet and that's that. I've noticed music on myspace for example won't work correctly it will play for 5 seconds and then cut out, or won't play at all and yet I can load the page. This problem has happened before with the same router and I was messing around trying to fix it and then all of a sudden I wasn't have the problem, but today it started up again. Networking is definitely not one of my strong suits so I'm clueless as to what causes a weird problem like this. Anyone have any idea?

Well, I'm going to be kinda brutal here. You bought a cheap router, and the reviews I can find on it all say it has a lot of issues. My recommendation? Get rid of it and replace it with a Linksys WRT54GL - which is NOT available in retail stores.

Lol yeah glc you have it correct, unfortunately I wasn't the one to buy the router. But yeah I did my own investigating on the router and it's obviously a cheap router, if only I was there when she bought it. I wasn't a fan of wireless routers to begin with but, our dogs kept chewing through the wires so, I decided to give one a try. Anyways if I was to purchase this router you recommended me what adapters etc are needed? Basically all I needed on this Ativa router was a USB adapter what exactly would I need to hook my other computer up wireless? Just a PCI slot network adapter? Alas, the computer I'd be hooking up is roughly 5 years old would it have a port for the PCI network adapter?

A PCI adapter is preferable to USB - the matching Linksys WMP54G is a good bet. Any computer from the last 10 years should have PCI slots. Newegg carries those too.
