Wireless Gateway as Wireless Router

My friend has a wireless gateway provided by her ISP. Its a modem/router. She wants to use this just as a wireless router without any DSL line connected to the gateway. Is this possible?

I'm not clear on why - if you simply want to use it as a switch and wireless access point for a LAN that assigns IP's and is not connected to the Internet at all, yes.

My friend just transferred on a building where their internet comes from a socket. No modem no router. Just an ethernet cable. She needs to assign a static IP on her PC for it to work. Her boss have a spare wireless access gateway provided by a local ISP and they want to share the connection with her co-employees. The wireless gateway is a Siemens Speedstream. 4 ethernet ports and 1 DSL line port.

Nope, that won't work. You need a wireless router that has an Ethernet WAN/Internet port, set up for static IP.

The Siemens Speedstream have a port that says Internet/WAN. Its one of the 4 ethernet ports. Is that possible?

I have already asked them to buy a Linksys Wireless Router and I already helped them over the phone configuring it and its working now.Also helped them share a wireless printer. But I just want to make sure that they did not waste money if that gateway can work as a wireless router. Thanks in advance.

I've never seen a modem/router that has both a phone line jack and a WAN jack - it probably COULD have been configured for that use. I wish you had said that earlier, I apologize. All I've ever seen is straight switch ports.

They are better off with the Linksys anyway.
