PS3 Networking

Im a little confused on how you connect your PS3 to the internet.

My current setup is a family pc downstairs where BT Router is located.

Then an office computer upstairs with the reciever to the wireless,

I want the PS3 in the office room upstairs how do i go about getting the kit (ethernet cable, wireless adapter etc)

My main goal is to setup my ps3 in my office upstairs and have it run off from an adapter or something that plugs init at the back and picks up from my existing wireless connection so i can play online with my games.

Use a wireless bridge or game adapter to connect the PS3 directly to the router.

if you have a computer near the ps3, run a cat5e cable (cant be standard cat5) from the computers ethernet port to the ps3's,

-then go into network connections,

-wireless network connection,

-then go to advanced and allow other computers to connect to this computer through its internet connection

and it should do it.

otherwise have fun configuring a whole new device into your setup and spending more money on it.

The way you suggested is much more complicated and likely to have problems. Just get a wireless bridge or game adaptor and be done with it. If you can afford a PS3 you can afford ~$50 in networking equipment.

Thanks, I will go for the adapter could you show me some pictures of it and where i can get it from, I live in the UK, I would prefer to get it from a shop however im willing to buy online.

Which one would you reccomend my Internet connection download speed is about 230kb on 2mb connection.

My router is a "BT Wireless Network 1250" according to portforward.com

The guy who did my computer gave me a "wireless key" that i was not to lose its a 26 digit number will this be needed to connect the console to the wireless also what other information will i need.

It has built in Wifi, just connect to your router.. maybe you should check out what you're buying a bit more.

Yes you will need your key, you won't be able to connect without it. Hence why he said "dont lose it" That key is your router's security password!

What has built-in wifi, the 360? Near as I can tell from google, that's simply not the case.

Overkill-GB, which model PS3 do you own? All except the 20GB version have built-in Wifi. If you have the 20GB version, I'd go with a Linksys bridge from glc's link.

The 60GB has WiFi so you can set iit up, everyones doing it so you should have no problems

No, if it has built-in wireless, you simply configure it to talk to your router, using your wireless key. No cables required.

If the PS3 has built-in wifi, you DON'T NEED to buy the adapter.

Confirm the SSID for the access point, press the right button.
Select the security settings as necessary, press the right button.
Enter the encryption key, press the right button. (The encryption key field will display an asterisk (*) for each character you enter. If you do not know the key, contact the person who set up or maintains the access point).
Select Easy or Custom and adjust the settings.
If you select Easy, then the basic settings are automatically set.
If you select Custom, then you need to enter the settings. Refer the settings supplied by your Internet service provider.

NOTE: the "access point" is your BT router.

The 360 hasn't even been mentioned in this thread. It's called 'PS3 Networking'.
And Overkill, you shouldnt have any problems connecting to your router. It's all built in and ready for you.

Yeah, I realized that a while back, but didn't think it was worth polluting the thread to point it out.

So theres no reason to purchase a game adapter as the 60Gb PS3 version will simply be able to connect to my router without any other hardware using my wireless key.
