Network devices not installed
Trying to get DUN working on a IBM Thinkpad 600x under Win 2K, I receive Error 720 - No PPP Protocols configured.
MS support site suggests checking protocols installed but there is no Network icon in Control Panel. Have now managed to get Network Adapters installed in Device Manager but it only shows a Device that has no drivers. Cannot find where to download Network drivers for this system. Not sure how to get TCP/IP, NetBUI installed to allow DUN access. |

rjfv - thanks for reply. I wish I did have a YellowTriangle! The problem is that I forced W2K to install a Network adapter but of course, I doesn't know what it is (nor do I) and so lists it in Device Manager as Unknown Device. Now if I could only find the driver for this then I think i'd be in business. Trouble is I can't find it anywhere not even on the Lenovo site.

Does the laptop even have a modem in it? Installing the modem driver should install all the protocols you need.

Hi glc, well yes it does have an internal modem and it is working hence the Error 720 that I received when I dial out to the ISP. I downloaded the latest modem driver from the Lenovo website and all that did was upgrade the modem from LT Winmodem to Lucent Winmodem. Still got the same Error 720 when dialling out. Also still no Network icon in Control Panel to verify add/delete protocols. I tried to get W2K to install one of the (few) IBM network adapters (Ethernet Jet) listed when installing a network card in Add Hardware but all it did was put up the Yellow Triangle.
Seems to me that unless someone knows which network adapter is installed then I'm dead in the water with this one. As I said, Lenovo don't even list one - to the best of my Web searching. I remember another client had an old IBM Thinkpad and the internal modem didn't work on that and we used a PCMCIA modem instead. Don't really want to recommend that workaround to the client, as it might not be the solution and he'd be throwing good money after bad. |

Thanks glc, as always. I won't be able to get access to this laptop for a couple of weeks but asa I do, I'll run that utility and let you know what happens.

Finally fixed the problem. Found TCP/IP by selecting it from the Properties Network tab in the DUN connection I had been using. First had to uninstall the Simple TCP/IP Service. Then reinstalled TCP/IP by the same method as the Uninstall and now the DUN works fine. This link was helpful http://www.uri.edu/its/pdf/handout.no.24.pdf
