Exclamation HELP- XP & Vista not seen on home network

My XP desktop cannot see the Vista laptop, and my Vista laptop cannot see the XP desktop (except the XP does show up in the VISTA network map - like this -- vista connects to network router then to internet, xp connects to switch then to network router then internet -- this shows up on in the Network Map window with both using IPv4 address - but I can't click on the XP icon, only the Vista icon)

My configuration:
XP SP2 desktop - running XP firewall for now, connect by cable to the router
Vista laptop - running Vista firewall for now, connecting to the router by wireless
Ativa wireless G router, AWGR54 [manufactured by Belkin, might be F5D7230-4]
cable internet

both computers have unique NAME, both have same WORKGROUP

XP-
I installed Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder on the XP machine (after that my xp pc showed up in the vista network map)
XP LAN connection properties all the following are checked:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer sharing
Link Layer TD
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) - under Advanced, WINS, Net-Bios under TCP is checked
Firewall Exceptions checked:
Comodo antivirus email checking
File and printer sharing
UPnP Framework [what is this? is this okay?]
I have right clicked on folders, and checked share this folder on the network and allow network users to change my files.
In My Network Places it shows Microsoft Windows Network, WorkGroup [NAME], desktop [NAME], then the folders I shared, the printers, SharedDocs, and printers & faxes

VISTA-
Vista Network and Sharing center
[router name] network (Private network)
Access - local and internet
connection - wireless network connection [router name]
Network Discovery - On
File Sharing - On
Public folder sharing - On
Printer sharing - on
Password protected sharing - Off
Media sharing - Off

Under Wireless Network Connection Properties:
{Networking}
Client for Microsoft Networks - checked
QoS Packet Scheduler - checked
File & Printer Sharing - checked
TCP/IPv6 - not checked
TCP/IPv4 - checked
LLTD Mapper I/O Driver - checked
LLTD Responder - checked
{Sharing - nothing checked}
Allow other network users to connect through this comp's internet connection - not checked
Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection - not checked - greyed out

I have right clicked and shared folders, advanced sharing, Share this folder is checked, number of simultaneous users = 2, clicked on permissions, set to everyone - checking on share tells me that the permission level for everyone is co-owner
When I go to Network, only the Vista laptop with it's shared folder and public folder is listed - the XP desktop is not listed.

Sorry for the long post, but I thought it save time.
Can anyone please help??!!

Is it a router setting somewhere??? -- HELP PLEASE! I have spent hours on this! It shouldn't be this complicated.
Thanks, lani

I forgot to add, I can ping both computers from the other computer -- XP can ping Vista and Vista can ping XP. Sent = 4, received = 4, lost = 0.

your Vista user account MUST have a password to successfully network with XP.

Okay, I added a password to my user account - on both computers, also my user name is the same and the password is the same on both computers. btw, XP is Home SP2 and Vista is Home Basic (I know it's the bottom line, but I just need this notebook for internet and documents)

XP (oak) still does not see any other workgroup computers.
Vista (maple), Network shows:
MAPLE - COMPUTER - TREES - TREE NETWORK
OAK - COMPUTER - TREES - -------blank-----

When I double click on OAK, I get an error box that says Windows cannot access \\OAK, Error Code: 0x80070035
The network path was not found.

>> So what to try now? Some have suggested buying a Linksys router. -- Please help! thank you.

sounds like a firewall issue now, disable all firewalls to allow you to troubleshoot.

well, had to reset the Vista machine back to the beginning. haven't had a chance to test it will all the firewalls off.

right now I can access the internet from both machines and that's the most important thing. it really bugs me that I can't get the two pc's to talk to each other, but I'm spending too much time on this....and I've got all kinds of holiday things going on.

does anyone know of a simple, step-by-step guide for networking XP and Vista together? ...I got the hardware part down.

What about networking for dummies or something? what about this software that is suppose to set it up for you: http://www.networkmagic.com/ Does anyone have any experience using this software?

thanks

Ready to Pull my Hair out..

Hi,

I'm having the same issue with a couple of twists.

Config:

MAIN Desktop PC: XP home Dell Dimension 8200 Desktop
Using Roadrunner broadband, Motorola Cable modem physically connected to Linksys wireless G router (WRT54G).
WORKGROUP mshome
Kaspersky Antivirus

Secondary Desktop PC: HP Pvaillion, XP HOME
connected via linksys usb adapter, wireless g
Shares files and internet connection with Dell
Can print to printer on Dell (Canon PIXMA ip3000)WORKGROUP mshome
Kaspersky Anti-virus

this week added two new laptops"

Both Fujitsu A6110's
Running Vissta Home premium
WORKGROUP name: mshome
both have built in wi-fi
both are running kaspersky anti-virus

Yesterday everything was working fine, had access to all computers from one another. This morning, the VISTA laptops can not access the XP desktops. Microsoft updates ran overnight.
The odd thing is that even though the Visat Laptop cannot see the Dell PC, they can print to the printer that is attached to it.

installed Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder on the XP machine (after that my xp pc showed up in the vista network map)

I have tried everything to get them to see each other again and am frustrated beyond all belief. HELP!!!

Me to

I have the same issues as you but with the opposite setup (Desktop is Vista, Laptop is XP). Have you contacted Microsoft about this? I am almost positive the problem resides in Vista as I have networked many XP - XP computers in my day with no problem. Also, I understand a massive update/patch for Vista is coming soon. This update is advertised to make Vista liveable. I hope it addresses networking.

I had the same problem when I purchased my laptop (HP DV9000) with Vista Home Premium last year. It also came loaded with Norton Symantec Antivirus. I removed the Norton and installed AVG and now share files on my network using both wireless and wired.
