Internet Fiasco
Alright before I state the problem allow me to state the spec's of the internet system:
INTERNET PROVIDER: Charter Communications (Northern Illinois & Southern Wisconsin) INTERNET SPEED PROVIDED: 10 Meg INTERNET TYPE: Cable Modem ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INTERNET ROUTER: Linksys Wireless - G (54mbps) Broadband Router TOTAL DEVICES W/ INTERNET FROM ROUTER: 6 - 3 PC's - 1 Nintendo DS - 1 Xbox 360 - 1 Vonage Hookup (3 total phones) *two of the PC's, the DS and the 360 all have wireless adapters hooked to them to recive the wifi w/ out being hardwired to the router. The most devices online at a single time is usually 3 to 4. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our phones are wireless since we use a vonage based system. They are made by Uniden and have a rating of 5.8GHz ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Alright with the spec out of the way here's my problem: Up until recently we have had our Routers security set at WPA Encryption. Yesturday I downgraded to a 128 - bit WEP code so that the Nintendo DS would be able to hookup to the router for my brother. Now suddenly the wireless devices are getting very weak signal's. Both of the PC's that are wireless get poor signals and also are nearly impossible to get hooked up to upon bootup to the access point (the router) the software on the PC from Linksys on the wireless PC's states the reciver on the PC's cannot access the router at all. It was also hard to get in the WEP key to get them back online. These wireless devices have been on the WEP 128 bit before and worked quite well, they also worked decent on the WPA encryption. The Xbox 360 gets a horrendous connection. It recongizes the the router and gets a strong signal but it is impossible to get onto Xbox Live or do anything on it at all. The wireless phones have never bothered the internet and I don't think they're the problem at all since we have had them for at least a year now. Could it be we have too many devices trying to split a Wireless - G connection or what? |

It's the 128 bit WEP. It sucks power big time. 64 bit WEP is not quite as bad.
