Is there anyway to regulate bandwidth on wireless routers?

I've had cable internet for a while now and lately, it's been really really really slow. I think it is because currently, the guy downstairs is also using the internet. I don't seem to have this problem when I turn off the wireless. I don't want to cut him off of his internet, but is there anyway to regulate how much bandwidth he is receiving? sorry if i used the wrong terms, not that great with networking xD

Tell your neighbor to get his own broadband.

Wait a minute, you're paying for broadband, someone else is stealing from you, you're complaining about slow internet, you have the ability to cut them off and you think that's HARSH!? Your generosity is admirable but if you let him mooch, you'll have to tolerate the slow speeds.

As a fellow new yorker I would use my sarcastic sense of humor with a blunt point.

I would knock on the neighbors door and ask him to give me his mac address so I can add him to my network, and then politely ask him if he would like to borrow my underwears or possibly my wife whiles hes stealing my wifi connection.

I think hell get the hint, .....or he might try to borrow your wife.

Like everyone else...I agree this is a an odd request...but some routers offer QOS (quality of service), which allows you to set the priority of certain ports. If you were to use a port besides 80 and set it to high priority (and your neighbor continues to use port 80) you could improve your performance, but you will be decreasing his.

what about setting up your router for MAC address filtering, or setup your wireless security WAP.

Set the wireless security, problem solved... what's he going to do, complain that you cut off his free access?

...not to mention the practical considerations behind this. It is probably the case that you're breaking the terms of service of your internet connection by allowing someone access in a different address to yours. What would concern me more is that if you notice a considerable slow-down of your connection, it's likely that your neighbour is downloading some large files. If that's illegal downloading, then I'd have thought the responsibility for that lies with you!
