Help understand some router/ip configuration questions

1. What is bridge mode? and how is it different from other modes? (if there are any)

I kind of understanding that bridge mode eliminated the zone between the modem and the router to just the internet and the router.

2. I am currently using a uTorrent program and just want to know if bridge mode affects the program's connection? It warned me one time about freeing port.

3. Do I need to set my IP to static? and are there any benefits from having a static over dynamic ip address?

My home network consisted of 2 wired and 1 seldom wireless laptop.
I have try reading some guides and explanations, and Jesus! it just gets even more confusing. I would like good security and do not mind having to set things manually if I understand how to.

Bridged mode on a DSL modem is used with a router, you set the router up to use PPPoE instead of the modem. It makes port management easier, you only have to worry about the router. If you have to forward ports, you want to use a static local IP.
