How many ports do you need? How much are you looking to spend?

I am thinking that wireless on a lan for gaming would cause slowdown on the wireless side.
a switch with cat cable ports would be more effective for gamming I think. |

Yup. If it's just lots of ports you're looking for, buy whatever router you choose, and just hook up a switch or several. As for wireless, if you're a serious gamer you won't be happy with the performance, connect with an ethernet cable.

I would care less if I had a wireless connection at a LAN party. The reason I want wireless is for my mom to stop stealing my modem from my room all the time. I was wondering if there was a good wireless gaming router out there (at least 8 ports, good quality not to expensive) that I good use at home for my network and at LAN parties?
Or is it just better to buy a switch seperate and get a wireless router at home? |

You're not going to find a router with more than 4 ports (plus one for the internet connection). Just get a separate switch.

The only 8 port consumer grade router I know of is a Linksys BEFSR81. It's not wireless.
I'd get a Linksys WRT54GL and uplink it to a switch that has enough ports for your use. |

Same as glc, only with this router. It actually sorts the data and pushes time-sensitive packets ahead. The idea is no lag. http://games.dlink.com/products/?pid=370&#DGL-4300

Let me tell you, it was very hard going to newegg and pasting DGL-4300 in the search, there's 2 seconds of my life I'll never get back! Yes, you'll connect your modem to the WAN port of the router, then connect the switch to any of the LAN ports on your router. If the switch has an uplink port, use that one, but if it's less than about 4 years old, it probably doesn't have or need an uplink port, so just use any port. |

Beyond the physical connection of these lan parties another thing I would like to bring up is if your gonna play FPS your gonna need a node that is gonna run a dedicated server version of the game. Listen servers are completely horrible and will cause latency even on a lan that doesnt require a gateway. We would dump a small amount of money into making a computer just run like a cheap server so no one had an advantage of playing on the listen server or the latency problems.
Now if your having one of these new hybrid lan parties where your playing with like 4 but connecting to servers on the net then thats a different story and may have latency problems depending on your ISP. |
