Wireless connection

I am trying to establish a home network using a Belkin802.11g router. My broadband is ADSL.
I have no problems connecting to the internet using my modem, however when I connect my router to the modem (wired as per the instruction manual) it will not connect to the internet.
one message tells me that " IP conflict with another system on the network".
when connected the router is in contact with my other computer. Both OS are XP sp2.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

The router and your modem probably have the same IP address. Consult with your ISP for how to switch your modem to the "bridge" mode and how to set up the router to take over the login duties. Here in the US, you would set it to PPPoE and store your username and password, but things may be different there in Oz, I think I've seen special settings for Telstra and BigPond.

Your other option is change the router's internal IP address - example, if right now it's 192.168.2.1, change that to 192.168.3.1. Change the 3rd number, whatever it is.

Make sure all your computers are set to obtain IP address automatically.

Hi GLC
Taking your advice I contacted my ISP who were less than helpful, would not assist and that they could send someone to connect my router for $95.
Your other option to change the routers iinternal IP address!! How do I access the router setup? Another naive question, What part does the local area network play in this?
Again any advice appreciated.

The manual for router administration should be on the CD it came with. If it didn't come with one, you can download the manual.

I had router problems recently and my ISP (Earthlink) bent over backwards to help. I have TimeWarner(where is the puke emoticon when you need it) and they provide the infrastructure (Modem and cable) but were less than helpful, in fact a PITA and unsatisfactory (by now you may have guessed I am less than thrilled with the cable company). I was having trouble connecting a Linksys WRT54GL router and thought I had connected it correctly. Bottom line as I am assuming that your ISP is not Earthlink, contact Belkin for support. I was connected to Linksys support via my ISP and within 5 minutes everything was operating smoothly.

Belkin may have the same type support that Linksys does in that they may be able to walk you through the setup. I would contact then as it can not hurt.

I think we may be able to help here, but we need some more details and have you do a few things.

1. Who is your ISP?
2. With the modem connected directly to the computer, open a command prompt and type:

ipconfig

Post the IP address, default gateway, and subnet mask.

3. Post the exact brand and model of modem.
4. Post the exact model of the router.
