weird internet droppage

OK, I've got a weird problem. When I turn my computer on for the first time during the day, I can connect to the internet. If I close the internet, come back a few hours later, I have no connection. I called my service provider, and they replaced the modem, n/h. I reinstalled my motherboard drivers a couple of times, n/h. I swapped the ends of the ethernet cable, n/h. When it isn't connecting, my IP address is 169, and I was told that means the pc isn't recognizing the modem. What else can I do?

Are you hooked up to a router in between your modem and pc?

Can you tell me the make and model of the modem?
When you setup your internet connection did you tell your computer that you connected via a modem that is always on?

It's a Motorola SB5101. I never went through an internet setup. I wasn't home when the cable guy came; I assumed the settings left on the pc were proper. I'm actually on now after I shut my computer off for a few hours. It had kicked me off earlier with unable to find page messages, and the 169 IP address, after leaving a my browser running idle for about ninety minutes.

weird internet droppage

I too have had my connection to the internet randomly drop. Sometimes doing a ipconfig/ release and renew works but most generally it takes a reboot. I do a ipconfig /all and the IP addresses all seem to be there. I have disabled the machine's ability to shut the network card off. By the way, it is on the motherboard too. I had thought about replacing it and was told that if I can see my router and it shows I am connected, it has to be an IE or firewall problem. Any suggestions?
