ip addresses
Excuse my ignorance please. You have 2 ip addresses for your computer right? An external ip address for the internet and an internal ip address for your computer?
So the external ip address is not static at least with my isp unless you pay more. So with a changing external ip address, can my home network be set up with static ip addresses for each computer. Because my isp says that the only way to get static ip addresses is to pay for a business account. Thanks. |

If you have a router you can have static internal IP addresses, usually 192.168.(1 or 0).xxx these allow you to easily access each computer while on a computer on your local network with a non changing number. These IP addresses are not accessible to people on the internet hence the use of the router. your ISP gives you a dynamic IP to your router that changes whenever they feel like(usually on router/modem reboots) this number is accessible by people on the internet and of course the point is with it changing all the time its not very useful for remote connecting.
Long story short, yes you can assign static IPs for your personal computers on your local network. |

internal and external networks
The Computers in your Network make up an internal network and the internet will be external network.
Each computer in a network has a unique IP address and if you have a router, those computers will be connected to that router and the WAN port of that router will be connected to internet. The IP address on the WAN interface of the router is called "Public IP" and the IP address in the internal interface of the router is called "Private IP". If you are trying to access the network of your computers from internet ,than you cannot because you cannot access the "Private IP" from internet but you can access the "Public IP" from your network or from Internet. Please note that your computer only has 1 unique IP address not 2. I hope this helps, if you still have questions please donot hesitate to ask. |
