wireless shows connection, cant connect to the internet

I have a Gateway laptop computer with built in wireless. I can connect to the internet with an ethernet cord with no problems but when I try to use the wireless it will not connect. It shows I have good connection. I have two choices, my wireless router and we have free internet in the city in which I live. Both showing good connection. The local free internet is not encrypted and still cant connect. So, I thought it may be a software issue so I uninstalled zone alarm and turned off windows firewall. This did not work. I also tried safe boot with network with no luck. What could be the issue? Is it possible it is the wrong driver for the network card? Thanks for any replies.

Can you provide us with more detailed hardware specs on your laptop, including OS? When you say it doesn't connect, what exactly does not happen? Do you not obtain an IP address or it will not even assoicate with the network?

HTH

It is a friends Gateway, OS is XP, not sure on the wireless card (Asus I think). It shows I have connection with the wireless, but when I try to browse the internet the browsers (ie6 and firefox) say cannot connect. Thanks for the reply.
