Just installed v8. Found stuff not found before. (Like in the 7.5 scan done minutes before.) Going to run the other stuff and see what was left behind. (Much nicer GUI and features!)

Uses less memory for me than 7.5 and there seems to be more stuff. Feels alot more like a full Anti-Virus now. I love it!

When upgrading from AVG free 7.5 to AVG 8 free, should I un-install v7.5. first?

No, the install process for v8 uninstalls v7.5.

I have the free version of 8.0 installed on my laptop & desktop. I have all security components running. I don't see any way to manually adjust the scan settings or simply scan my pc whenever I choose. From the options available, I must let AVG run some sort of scan at some point during the week, right? Is this option not available on the free version?

The reason I ask is because there was a message that an AVG program was still running when I tried to power down my pc one day and I had to cancel it in order to turn my pc off. This happened on both my laptop and desktop. I'm sorry, I don't remember exactly what AVG program was running at the time and I will write it down if it happens again. I'm just wondering if there's a way to have all components of AVG 8.0 running without it taking control over my pc.

Thanks

Tools, advanced settings, schedules, scheduled scan - uncheck the box for enabling the task. While you are in the advanced settings, this is where you have to do almost all of your modifications from defaults.

It happened again on my laptop. The 'program is not responding' window poped up as I tried to power down. The program running was "AV8 AVI Tester". There was another message that poped up behind the program not responding window but I could not read. After I pressed cancel the pc shut down. The enable this task box was unchecked.

I've been getting those pop-ups telling me to upgrade to 8.0. So today I finally did. Seems to be a good program. Very full featured.

The only issues I've run into relate to the firewall. When I had the AVG firewall up I couldn't get Windows Live Messenger to connect. I had to turn off the AVG version and use the Windows Vista firewall. Some how upon fiddling. Turning it on and doff. I got a dialogue box asking me if I would allow Windows Live Messenger access. I chose to allow it. And it's fine now.

Now, I'm having the same problem with mIRC. Perhaps I have something set wrong. Any ideas what it might be?

Thanks.

Ive been running AVG 8 for almost a month now and it seems to be just fine except I notice my frame rates during games is much worse now then when I had 7.5 running during gameplay. Is there a setting to keep AVG from not using as much system resources? What could the bogdown be on my system? Do I really need an upgrade already? I just built this thing a year and a half ago.

Core2 duo 6300 clocked to 2.8GHz
4GB Ram Balistix @ 6400
Asus P5B
Seagate 320GB .11 HD
GeForce 7900GS

Wish I could help you but I'm new to 8.0 too. Incidentally I solved my problem by running the "wizard". Did that once. Recogniszed my mIRC and Windows Live Messenger. Set it to allow it to access my laptop. No problems since. Odd I had to run the "wizard" to get it to work. McAfee was more flawless. Installed that and it worked without a hitch. No performance penalties.

Not sure why an "internet security" program would be affecting your frame rates while gaming. Odd. I don't game so there isn't anything I can say. But good luck. Have you checked the settings in 8.0 to make sure it's not eating up system resource RAM? Maybe you can turn off some options. Shrug.

Jeff, have you tried uninstalling AVG and seeing if the frame rates improve? I just checked my processes list and AVG is using a total of about 50 megs of ram. This would only be significant on a system that has a marginal amount of ram.

Framerates are just fine when AVG isnt running the scan. While scanning the framerates drop to 7-10fps vs the normal 75fps. This only happens during scanning. Previous AVG versions didn't cause this much of a performance drop during the scan.

Common sense dictates that you turn off scanning when gaming...............

I noticed that AVG 8 takes forever to scanned the system. Anybody has this problem beside me? Way slower than the previous version.

Of course it does. It's scanning for all types of malware, not just virus. It's like running two scanners at once.

I haven't figured out what any of these issues are. This program seems to run poerfectly for me and now it is the only anti-malware program in my computer. Finally, a dependable all-in-one scanner!

According to an AVG contact I have they're releasing a service pack for AVG to address some issues. However, when I was talking to him they didn't know about the Spybot and SpywareBlaster issue with AVG wrongfully detecting the 'immunize' feature as malicious.

Hopefully, by the end of next week all of this could be sorted out.
