Several users have had issues with the new version. It's nothing like AVG used to be. Went from a basic/lean program to a MUCH larger beastie...

True, but if you have no other then it is better than none at all correct? Support for AVG 7.5 is to end May 31 2008 from the pop up I got this morning.

I may have to look for another AV program for the future...what is the recommended AV program now instead of AVG 8.0?

I’m using AVG 8.0 as we speak. Is it different? Yes. Is it better or worse? I can’t tell yet. The biggest change I have noticed is that they seem to have incorporated their antivirus and antispyware into one program. It also changed the manner in how it updates. Honestly, it’s still the perfect price (free), so I can live with it. It may be a work in progress on AVG’s end.

I just upgraded to AVG 8.0 because the previous version wasn't able to update itself properly anymore. So far, AVG 8.0 seems to work fine. Now just gotta update our other 2 computers.

I used 8.0 on a machine that was in bad shape. I started to notice it was finding both spyware and viruses and it did a smash up job. I think it's improved.

I just downloaded the program, so far pretty great. I was just wondering as I couldn't find a separate option to scan for spyware; does AVG scan for viruses and spyware in the same scan?

Use it to scanned the system and check the processes. AVG 8 uses so much less CPU resource during scanning process. One thing bugging me is that there is not option to disable email scan or spyware scan.

I installed it and personally did not care for it. I went to Avira on on PC and Avast on another. Haven't decided which I prefer yet.

If the new AVG 8.0 has an anti- spyware program in it, will it conflict with Windows Defender ? Is it better than Windows Defender ? Should I remove Defender and just keep the new AVG 8.0 ?? Many thanks, Mike

I shouldn't conflict with windows defender.

I currently use avg anti-spyware, and windows defender without any problems.

I received a pop up message today on one of my XP machines that was still running 7.5 that AVG will stop supporting 7.5 with new updates as of May 31. Looks like you hold outs need to upgrade to 8.0 or switch to another AV. I had one customer purchase the AVG Security pack. It includes a firewall that turns off Windows firewall. It didn't play nice with some Yahoo Family Secuity stuff he installed too. We had a little talk about tool bars and installing extra stuff.

The new AVG is quite impressive, likely the best version I've seen. Been running it for about a week or so and have no issues with it.

My customers are now removing their other security programs and going with AVG 8.0 and firewall only. All who have done this report that they like it. It also incorporates a new "link scanner" which will examine a link as soon as you do a search and show an icon telling whether the link is safe.

I have left Spybot Search and Destroy and Spywareblaster on my personal systems and have found no conflicts with AVG.

well, as a old fart and reluctant to change, today I installed the new one V-8 and like it, also installed XP-sp3, and IE 7.0, so far everything is fine and my missing desk top icons even came back, so I guess I am happy with it all again.

Well my subscription to AVG 7.5 runs out in Agust so I will wait until then to decide which to buy.. I just spoke to a sales rep for avg and if you have a paid version (such as I) you will get updates until your subscriptions expire mine in Aug 08..

I have been running 8.0 f0r about a week also, and I have it on auto update. Just to make sure I am getting my update I am going ahead and updating manually. It is says I have been updated successfully, No update files found. What's up with that, i know darn well there usually is updates everyday. What gives?

If the AVG icon is in all 4 colors, you don't need any updates. It will tell you when updates are available and you missed the auto update time frame. 8.0 uses a red ! on the icon now instead of graying out like 7.5 and previous versions.

All AVG subscribers should automatically be offered a 'free' upgrade to version 8.

Answer me this. Why have there not been any updates for several days now? The older versions had updates everyday? Anyone know?

Dan - I've noticed mine updates automatically in the background. It doesn't have the pop-up anymore telling you it is updating. Odds are that by the time you trying to manually update it, it already did it for you.

In the user interface, look in the lower left corner. It will tell you when it was last updated and give you the Virus DB version. Mine is 269.23.11/1422 and was updated 5/9 at 3am.

Got it. Thanks glc.

I have another question. How come you can only do a line scan in the safe mode, and is this a effective way to scan with the line scan versus how it was with previous versions.

I still have 6 months left on my Panda AV subscription but was tired of the long boot times and drain on memory. I'm going to use the AVG 8.0 free version and if it proves to be a pig I can always go back to Panda-reluctantly.

I've installed AVG on a LOT of computers up to now, and the most frequent complaint was concerning the update procedure, which added a fair bit of time to the bootup procedure on older machines (except those who I migrated from Norton Avir, they were just pleased their computer worked again!! ) The fact that v8 updates quietly in the background is a big improvement, I think. Am also liking the addition of the link scanner for those less web-savvy that tend to be slightly more click-happy!
