AVG 8.0 .bin file missing?

I just booted my XP Home p.c. and AVG updating reports a .bin file is missing and the update failed. I ran the update several times and got a .bin error every time. I booted my Vista p.c. as well, and it reports the same problem. Not sure if it's related to this thread problem updating AVG free 8.0 or not.

Anyone else have this problem?

Have you tried to uninstall, and then reinstall?

from reading peoples posts on other forums an uninstall/install won't solve the problem. I think it is just best to wait for a fix.

Yah - looks like AVG is on it. That's the first form of trouble I've had with 8.0. Thanks.

Question

Now I don't feel like the Lone Ranger
I've got the same exact problem. { a DLL missing } popped up a couple of hrs. ago

Is a fix in the works, or since it's a free version , we'll just have to pay for the retail
version that works?

Yeah, it's their problem. That link that cmillar6 gave explains it. Apparently they're working on a fix.
Same thing, different thread here.

Here's the Fix

Hey all,

I had the same problem.

I posted the fix on my personal blog.

Should work like a charm.

Yes, that happened to me also, just this evening actually. I'm running AVG on Vista home premium as well and I uninstalled and reinstalled AVG, still it says I have a .bin error, so I uninstalled it again. Currently using the anti-virus feature Zonelabs internet security offers. Will troubleshoot AVG later, please post if you find out why we're suddenly receiving this error.

Thanx,
DW

A workaround has been posted by binarydreams - but I had to edit out the link to his blog due to forum rules. However, here's the solution, copied and pasted from his blog:

Quote:
1) Go to the AVG website at the following URL: http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-update

2) Create a folder on your desktop and download the following files to the folder:
1) AVI: 270.6.4
2) IAVI: / 1616

3) Open the AVG control panel and click the "Tools" link. Select "Update from Directory," navigate to the desktop file that you created and placed the downloaded files into and select the file as the update source.

AVG should automatically load the update files and all of your notifications should go back to green. Hope this helps.
One step was left out - it will analyze the updates and the progress bar will stop about 1/4 of the way across. Look in the popup window, you then need to hit the "update" button.

You may ignore the warning on the AVG download page that tells you not to do it with the Free edition. It works fine, I just did it.

Binarydreams, thank you very much for posting the solution.

** Update - I just booted my Vista p.c. and AVG updated itself succesfully. Looks like they fixed the problem. **

Never got a chance to try binarydreams' fix, but thanks for the effort.

All four of my systems have updated themselves properly as well. AVG was on top of it.
