wireless
my router is in one room and can't move. i have a 50ft ethernet cord running downstairs to another router which splits to my xbox, desktop, and laptop.
i want to move my setup to my room (on the first floor and across the house. i can't run an ethernet through the house, so i am trying to figure out this wireless business. can i get a wireless thing ( don't know what to call it) in my room, and plug in my computer and xbox without an ethernet cord? i mean without an ethernet to the wireless thing if so would the speed be terrible compared to the ethernet cord from my main router? ty Last edited by Epiic; 12-04-2008 at 04:32 PM. |

Is your router already wireless capable? If not, you'll need a wireless router, or a wireless access point.
Then you have two options for your desktop. You can use a USB Wifi Dongle or a PCI card that you put inside the computer and the antenna sticks out the back. Either one will work but I'd go for the card. Best option is to match the brand to your router. The wireless signal will always be a bit less fast then the wired option, but it should still be fine.

yes i believe my 2wire modem from qwest is wireless because i can connect my laptop to it wireless.
what i really want to know if i can get something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833124190 and have it not have to plug into a modem so i can put my xbox and computer into it in my room, which doesn't have a phone plug so i can't have the modem there the card would probably work but i want my xbox online also so is there anything that can do this will the connection be bad for gaming/downloading |

If your 2Wire has wireless, you don't need that router.
You can add a PCI Wireless card to the desktop and pick up the wireless signal from the 2wire, just like your laptop does. For the Xbox, Microsoft sells a wireless adapter. It's pricy but thats Microsoft: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16874103016 |

The best solution is to put a phone jack in your room and move the 2Wire. Next best solution is run an Ethernet cable through the walls and/or under the house or through the attic from the router to your room. With a cable, all you need in your room is a cheap switch to run all your devices wired.
